1989 toyota corolla

Hello

gts us version bought the car a montha go and they guy toldme he had put a used axle in the passenger side there is a leak coming from the axle. I changed the axle seal today and it still leaks there is about a 1/2 inch of play in the axle. on the end of the axle where the axle goes into the transmission My question is should there be a clip on the end of the axle where it goes into the tranny to click in there wasnt one there. Thanks Paul

Yes, there should be a clip. Well,... guess you should go get a new/rebuilt axle, a new axle flange seal and replace them... while you go through all this hassle, make sure you don't need new wheel bearing, brakes, or other parts, as it's easier to do while it's in pieces. Get about 4 quarts of Tranny oil to put back in when it's back together.

oops,, I just remembered,,, you maybe asked wich tranny you have.. cause they make the seals in about 5 different sizes... mine has the C52 trans.. so I had to get a C52 tranny seal for the side.. each side (driver and passenger) has a different sized axle and therefore a diffrent size seal. The passenger side If I remember right) has a larger diamete axle, hnce the tranny axle flange seal is larger around... YOu must know what model transmission you have... I either get my stuff from Carquest or Kragen auto ( www.partsamerica.com ). If they don't have it in stock then it takes a few days to get the seal. But they usuallyhave the half axles in stock. Autozone didn't seem to carry the stuff when I needed it, but I do business there too.

You might need new cotter pins, maybe some new high temp bearing grease, just in case you decide you need to pack something... decent prybar(s) to pop the axle out (even though you said clip is missing,, you might end up need a pry bar, now or in the future), the axle nut, or axle socket to get the axle nut (not sure what the size is on your front axle) off... a breaker bar.. I also use an air gun... (I can't do my work with it,, it save my ass all the time...)
a brake bleed kit also come in handy... I always try to keep a quart of brake fluid on hand.. also a good torque wrench..
You wil need a good selection of sockets and also some deep sockets...

Since the clip is vital, and, if it is the wrong one, or put on wrong, you will be sooo screwed....
why now just get a new/rebuilt shaft and save yourself a huge nightmare..

IMHO
