FX16 or FX16 GTS???

What do you guys think of an FX16 for $1,000? It's an automatic, but its realy clean. would this be a decent platform; when translplanting a 5 sp, and 4AGE? [from a AE92 GTS] Or should I jus stick to trying to find a stick FX 8 valve?

There is a FX16, and a FX16 GTS. I would like to know the difference between the two.

Heres the link for the FX16. . . .

Look under the hood to see if it's an actual 4AGE or a 4AC on that car, I can't recall but I don't think the 4AGE came in automatic, except in Japan.

I have seen a few automatic 4AGE powered fx16's on eBay... they DO exist in North America but are very rare to come by, just like the automatic Supercharged MR2.

FX16 and FX16 GTS are mechanically identical. The FX16 will be slightly faster as its lighter because it doesn't have trim & accessories like power mirror, sun roof, tilt wheel, etc.
The FX and FX16 besides engine difference the 16 has tweaked suspension with suspension stiffener bars and sway bars, rear discs. So the FX16 for $1000 is not bad, you can keep engine and just do tranny swap.

USA FX16 and FX16 GT-S

Root nailed it nicely. The FX16 and FX16 GT-S were only made in the U.S. in 1987 and 1988. The engine is a 4AGE. Parts are hard to come by and be certain you're getting the correct ones, because lots of sites think they are or say they are, but they are not. I think the confusion comes a lot from when Toyota when all computerized and did not pick up all of the unique features of the FX16 and FX16 GT-S. Good luck!

Yup, were talking about a 20 year old car! You can still find replacement parts, but you need to be really specific and inspect the part carefully when getting it. If you go to Toyota parts, they'll get it right, but it'll cost more. You won't have any worries about quality, but some parts from Toyota will be really expensive. Aftermarket, even if they look it up in their listing & it looks like the listing is correct, the part may not be right. Went through that for CV shafts and other parts.

Engine and Tranny are the same.

I have to say tho, the GTS Seats are much better than the normal FX16 seats all around. Exterior has color matched bumpers and ground effects from the factory that normal FX16s do not get. Interior has all the power conveniences and even the door cards have cloth embedded in it.

Although obvious, you get what you can available to you. I bought my FX16 GTS for less than 1000 US though...

California cars dont rust like they do in the mid-west. I've met people who bought thier FX in decent shape for 1000 US. This FX16 happends to be conveniently close to wear I live in fair condition. All I realy want is the shell. Would i be getting ripped if I paid 1000 for it?

If the body is indeed clean & straight, i'd consider that quite a reasonable price. Blue book for FX16s is only around $1500 if it's in really good shape. I was actually able to get a insurance settlement on mine for $1500 after i told them to go back & look some more at prices. They don't take things like shipping, engine swap into account. So I now have two FX16 wrecks and nothing to drive, boo. Have another one lined up though.

Buying a FX16

I am in the process of buying an FX16 and this thread has been very helpful. I am a little confused though and I was wondering if you could clarify a few things for me. I used to be a claims adjuster and know that this may be a replaced hatch, but it says its a GT-S. The car does not have any ground effects, no power options, no AC, black bumpers (white car), and no sunroof. I'm assuming it's just a FX 16 and not a GT-S. Am I correct or do the GTS's also come without that stuff? Also, does the VIN decode GTS? When I put it into a decoder, it just came up FX 16.

I think the car does have the GTS seats in it and the door panels do have cloth, so I am a little bit confused. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I forget which part of vin, but it does decode different for fx16 & gts. Sounds like that is a fx16. The 2 gts that ihad/have had power mirror, sunroof, skirts & spoilerette, tilt steering. Driver seat height adjuster. Interior cloth has a checker pattern. Fx16 I've had/seen also had cloth interior, but not the checker pattern. I'm pretty sure the gts came with the ground effects at least, sunroof may have been an add on option., I dunno.
