4A-F, my first, just one problem, Fuel Related...

Hi all, dont call me a noob, lol. Im a regular in the truck forums, but this is new turf and a new set of rules to me. Enough chit chatting.. Down to business.

So, i got a good (practically great) deal on an 87 Corolla SR5 sedan. It has the 4A-F with an auto. the car was filthy, but in good shape. Its getting detoxed as we speak...

I drove it home and it took literally almost a mile to reach 55. If i give it any more than 1/3 throttle, it dies. it runs but really bogged down. Absolutely no power! being the type of person i am, i want this car fixed and running 100%. I went to Toyota today to schedule an appointment and i got to talking with the service adviser. He told me that the cabuorated 4A-F with an auto will do that. They had major problems with them and it was only the auto transmission that had hesitation issues. Apparently it was pretty common and all, but no one with a manual had a problem with it. Thoughts? A replace from Toyota, which he said isnt much better, was close to a grand. I dont have much money and i want it to run right.

Any responses or thoughts would be greatly appreciated...

EDIT: What about this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1987-...spagenameZWDVW

My advise is to forgo toyota dealer those cars are so old they are gonna have a hard time fixing it, my mom had a 85 with similar problems.....

my guess if you have confirmed its a fuel issue.... would be that the secondary jets or high speed jets are clogged and inoperable especially if it has been sitting with old bad gas in it

Actually, I believe it's a 4AC with an auto, not a 4AF.

You can probably find a cheap 4AC motor as a replacement for this car for like $200 as they keep being dropped for the 4AGE swaps.

I thought it was 4AF.. its an AE 86... Corolla SR5 RWD. I dont think its the motor, but rather fuel delivery.. 4AC huh? whats the "C" designator significate? (i totally made that word up!)

Check your fuel pump pressure and try using a compressor to clean out the fuel line from the gas tank which could have crud in it. Also check all the vac lines for leaks as there is a ton of them. Also check the EGR valve to make sure it isn't sticking. If you have a timing light check that to make sure the timing is advancing as it should. I had an issue with rusted and binding centrifical weights in mine that caused some performance issues.
