USA 1.6 or 1.8 on a 97 Corolla

Hi Guys,

I'm looking for a head gasket kit on ebay and they only the only ones I found for my 1997 Corolla is for a 1.6 liter engine. My Mechanic (if you read my previous post you will understand why i'm going to you guys for help) says my 97 Corolla has a 1.8 liter engine. May someone please give me a brief history on what engine types were available back then and if I do have a 1.8 where can I find a head gasket set?

Thanks!

Your 1997 Corolla is an 8th Gen corolla(1997 - 2001). You have a 1.8 Liter 1zz-fe engine, as that is the only engine for the 8th gen.

Try your local pepboys/auto zone. they usually carry gaskets. If they don't have one, you can always go to toyota itself.

http://www.pitstopautoparts.com/ also has them, and I have used this site a couple times and have never had a problem with them.

check toyota and other places, I found with my 4af's headgasket toyota was By far the cheapest. $40 from toyota, and car quest wanted $80 for the low grade and $110 for the premium

Wrong

The OP said 1997. It's a 7th generation Corolla made from 1993-1997.

It came with a 1.6 4AFE and the 1.8 7AFE. To make sure, you should check the sticker under the hood of the car that should say what it is. Either that or the door jamb sticker, if it says AE101, then it has the 4AFE, if it says AE102 then it has the 7AFE.

Get your facts straight before posting.

How come my haynes manual covers 1993 - 2002? If thats two different Genereations, wouldn't they be different?

Lot of parts are interchangeable between them, for instance, both generations used the same suspension setup.

8th gen was engine refresh, radio/HVAC refresh, and slightly different front and rear lights. Nothing major changed otherwise, I think.

be sure the 4A uses a thick composite gasket while the 7a uses a thin 3 layer metal head gasket

be sure of what engine is in there use one of both of these 2 ways....

1. check the source look on the front right of the engine block, (right up against the tranny) about halfway down theres a flatspot that will give ya the real block code (7a / 4a)

2. the 1.8 liter has a aluminum stiffener that bolts to the bottom of the engine and to the transmission leaving a small black oil pan at the very bottom of the engine while the 1.6 has an all steel oil pan
right across the bottom off the engine..
