Replace AC clutch?

Hi all -

This is my first post to the forum. I have a 92 Corolla and the AC recently stopped working. The engine idles up when I push the AC button, but the clutch doesn't engage. I jumped straight from the battery to the clutch and it still didn't engage. Is there something else to check? Can I be sure that it's the clutch that went out? Did jumping straight from the battery really bypass all the fuses and relays (that's sounds too simple, but I had to ask!).

If it is the clutch, what's involved in removing/replacing it? I'm pretty good with nuts and bolts if I know what the problem is.
