Flasher - 98 Corolla

Hi, everyone. I'm hoping I've found the right Toyota gurus in this forum. I have a 98 Corolla, and I'm trying to replace the flasher. I've checked the Haynes book that says for a 98, "it's behind a panel" but doesn't say where. My library's Chiltons are all checked out.

I've taken the car to my mechanic (engine, breaks, alignment guy) and he nor his wrench guys could find it either. Does anyone here know where they hide this ellusive item? I'd hate to have to take it to a dealership and pay $100+ to unplug/plug the flasher.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Steve

What do you mean by "flashers"? the 4 way flashers?

The button for them is the red triangle next to the vents above the radio.

The flasher

The flasher is a round item that looks like a very large capacitor that has two blade-type plugins at right angles to each other.

The purpose is to cause the blinkers and the hazard signals to flash on and off. When you hear the clicking noise when your blinker is on, you're hearing the flasher. That's what I can't find and it's driving me nuts!

hmm... I really can't think about what your talking about...

Because it has to do with turn signals(flashers) and the sound of them, I am tempted to say look at the back of the gauge cluster.

If anybody else could give there advice, as that is only my best quess.

Australia

Hi Steve the flasher unit should be behind the panel it is probably square though the round ones are usually aftermarket ones look for a unit with terminal designations 49 49a C and 31 it could just look like a relay I hope this is of some help.

Many thanks!

Joe,

I may just fly down to Australia and give you a big kiss. Not really. I know I've seen this flasher, but since it wasn't round and my after-market replacement is round, I didn't think that was it. I wasn't about to start pulling fuses and relays without knowing what I was after.
Thanks for the great info. I'll post again to let everyone know when it's fixed. By the way, I called a shop that specifically works on Toyotas (Toy Doctor) and they had to put me on hold for 10 minutes to look in the book.
