Exclamation Possible CV Joint Problem?

Ok so I put my AE92 on jack stands again after replacing all the engine and transmission mounts.
If I sit there and rev the engine, all is well. No matter how high I rev, the engine mounts are happy and they absorb the vibrations just fine.

However, when I put into first gear, and the wheels are off the ground and spinning freely, the engine and transaxle stay put, until I open the throttle a little bit, and both the engine and transmission sway from left to right. It's as if the torque produced by the engine's rotating assembly is out of balance with whatever side components are keeping it in place.

So i don't know, do the CV joints have something to do with keeping an engine in place and damping engine movement? I know for sure that a good amount of grease has come out of the inboard joints.

Anyway, I really need help here. And rebuilding the axles are the only things i can think of right now, but it doesn't make sense why that would help. Bad wheel bearings? I'mnot hearing and scraping or screeching.

please help.

With the wheels dangling like that, the CV shafts are kind of at extreme angle that they normally aren't so there may be some binding and imbalance going on there. If you lost grease out of CV shafts then thats a pretty good sign that the boots failed. If it was like this for a long time, good chance dirt got in & messed up the joints. Might consider replacing shafts. After replacing a bunch of boots, last one I decided to replace entire shaft with remans. They weren't that much more expensive than the boots only, and saved a lot of messing with that grease that gets everywhere & makes a mess. Not to mention wrestling with those circlips that go flying off into interdimensional space never to be found again.

What prompted you to replace all the mounts? As Root states the axles were not meant to be driving when the front end is up on jacks, on some cars the joints can be damaged in doing this. Is a boot(s) damaged or split allowing the grease to leak out (and grit to enter)?

Best and just as easy to buy another axle. Replacing the boot is time consuming and the joint may already be damaged. Have not had much luck with NAPA rebuilt axles.

where were you guys a couple months ago.

As for letting the wheel roll, while on the stands; that didn't do any damage to the shafts because the lower control arms prevent shaft travel past a certain degree.

anyway, the problem is fixed. thread closed, thanks.
