20V codes

I've recently installed a new cluster that has a engine check light. Never had one b4.
To test it I disconnected the speed sensor plug and drove the car around to see if the check light came up. but It didnt.
I plugged it back in, and today i saw the light come on and stay on constant while i was driving. I couldnt check the codes when i switched off (using T1 and TE1), but when i did start the car after, no light came on.
Im confused. Does this mean the check light isnt working properly. maby not saving the codes sum how?
When T1 and TE1 are connected the engine light blinks normal.?

If it blinks constantly with the terminals bridged it means there are no codes. Sounds normal to me.

With the speedo disconnected it can take a little while to show the code, sometimes 2-3 mins.

After driving the car, for much longer than 2-3 mins, it still didnt come on.
Thats not my main concern. When i drive the car the engine light comes on, and stays on untill i turn off the car, and then when i start the car again there is no light unless i drive the car for a good while again.
Why would the code that is coming on while driving, not be saving?
It is putting the car in safe mode but i cant find the code because of this.

Is it possible to connect the terminals when the car is running?, because it seems to be the only way i might be able o check the code.?

chances are you cluster isnt working properly with the check engine light, because like you said you didnt have one before.

Double check all your wiring, that's for the engine light AND the terminals that you bridge.

If that is all fine then it's a faulty ECU, common ish for 20v's.
I've had one go, caused by leaky caps.

Ok so today when the engine check light came on, i just connected TE1 and E1 while the car was running, and got the 4-2 code, which is the vehicle speed sensor.
What I need to know is, my speedometer isnt connected, because the cluster is cable driven, but the speed sensor plug is connected on the gbox. Is this the reason the code is coming up?. or is it because it is a faulty speed sensor.?
I would hate to replace the sensor if the reason its coming up is because its not connected to the speedo??

I believe that's the case.

The speed sensor is not important, it won't effect your performance at all.
