I'm planning on buying one and I was wondering what I need to know before actually purchasing it..

and i want to get into auto x, drifting...and another thing..i forgot..haha =x

-Good starter car?
-Lifeitme
-what can i get for the money
-is it a good daily driver
-what mods do i need to do..now?
-etc. etc.
-price
Depends on condition of car, but 2000 will get you something that needs a little work rust wise
-pros/cons
4AGE motors are east to come by for replacements
-potential
With something like an ae86 the potential of the use of the car is in the driver, the use of this car rely's more on the drivers skill since it's under powered
-modifications
The list is massive, the aftermarket support for the ae86 is HUGE, from cams to pistions to coil overs, brake mods and so on.
-Good starter car?
From what I hear they are, I would say hell I jumped in one and drifted my first corner but then again some people have problems controling it. It'll refine your skills though since it's a pretty basic (raw) car technology wise.
-Lifeitme
Depends on your pockets... But like I said nice thing is if you blow a motor you can usually find 16v 4age for around $300 - $400. Other than that after fixing the rust on the car the key is to deal with rust while it's on the surface of the metal and can be grided off rather than cut out.
-what can i get for the money
Like I said above, Something that needs work.. Unless you buy a sr5 and deal with the 4ac motor for awhile. $2000 will get you a decent sr5. But a beat up gts.
-is it a good daily driver
Depends how you mod it, but in stock form it's great for daily driving, thats what it was designed to do. Winter might be a pain though depending if you live in the city or country, for someone like myself it would be a pain, then again the guys in the gta with rwd cars cry about how hard it is to drive there in the winter, should send them up here for a few days lol
-what mods do i need to do..now?
For learning? Nothing. Just do repairs. Possibly rims and tires since people usually put crappy tires on the stock rims and they have alot of sidewall.
People could say the same about the ae92...
You hear people saying the ae86 is a money pit and it breaks down all the time and you hear people say their ae86 is the more reliable car they've ever had!
Depends on the person and how they upkeep their car, this of course being AFTER you fix all the problems lol
With all the hype, unless you can find one in a cheaper price range there are better starter cars out there. List your needs, costs and what you want from a car and I'm sure you'll get help.
one 4wd car i wouldnt recomment drifting is the alltrack corollas. i dunno what u guys reckon, but on sealed surfaces i find mine preety unpredictable.

$2000? Good luck. If you're lucky, really lucky, you can find a good base car for that, but more than likely it'll need work. We're talking about a 20 year old car. Guys here are asking almost that much for SR5 AE86! BTW, go research the differences between the GTS & SR5, know what you're buying.
Like any Corolla, once it's fixed into good running condition, it'll be reliable, good daily driver. Given good maintenance, they'll last. But like any 20year old car, they've been through a lot & prob will need lots of work. If previous owner put some work into it & it's in great shape, you prob wont find one for $2000.
Look around net to see what kind of prices theyre going for. There are occasional stories of people picking one up for dirt cheap granny driven ones. You need to be lucky to find one of those and be looking hard and in places other than where enthusiasts are.
Potential? Much! That's why they're so popular now! & also why prices are creeping up. Steady demand, falling supply.
She wants to drift, so anything you give her has to be RWD. Sure you can drift in an AWD, but it's annoying.
I'd shoot for a 240 series volvo. Damn those tanks can drift.

Thats because the power ratio is 70/30, same as a camry, sometimes they go sideways, sometimes they push through the corner. :P
depends thought, now for 2000 chances are you aren't going to be picking up an imprezza or skyline, but those 2 cars would be rather difficult to drift and I doubt many of us on here have the skill to beat the trac system on those cars where it will change the power ratio to give you the most traction so if you try to drift it will alter that to pull you through....
