Just testing the waters (I dont think ill need an engine for a year or so)...what are Bluetop's selling for over in Toronto? I called around a few places in Ottawa and nobody sells them or wants to get them...Id rather not deal with Montreal shops after hearing so many horror stories.
On a related note...if the J-Spec are MAP sensored, does it complicate a swap significantly?

is there any reason for you to look for a bluetop????. i understand, lot of ppl will consider other 4AG like Redtop, various 20V, GZE....
they do come cheap, $500 for Bluetop/Redtop/silvertop.w/tranny... and all are Map sensored, but the only problem is, lots of engine shop in Toronto don't reallykeep the ECU for them......so even tho you comeup with MAP sensored 4AG, you most likely hafto the AFM ECU...unless you get the engine with the JDM ECU.......

$500 for an engine and tranny? Thats dirt cheap! omg! I thought whores were cheaper!
seriously though, $500 for the engine alone is cheap, but a tranny too?

Its going to sound dumb, but I want to drive the AE86 as it came from the factory, the way Toyota designed it...if I want to go faster, Ill mod a blue top with bigger cams PnP, flywheel ect...Im not looking for horsepower, I have the MR2 for that.
Does anyone have any experience in raising the redline of a stock bluetop head?

why would u want to do that unless u get springs and cams..
u can try using the redtop ecu...it'll make it run richer and the fuel cut is somewhere at 8300rpm. or at least that's what i was told...although i recall taking it past 100kmph in 2nd gear at shannonville...which is beyond 8300rpm i can tellu that :p

also, people say "i'll just gze this or turbo that or 20v this".. how many have actually done it?
swaps like that are time consuming and/or expensive.. dropping in a replacement bluetop is a 1 weekend-or-less, do-it-in-your-own-garage kinda job.. nice and easy.
i bought a rebuilt, mildly modified blue top with t50 trans from a guy on this forum for $700 or $900 (can't remember) and plopped it into 2 different ae86's .. each time it took a weekend.. the only extra costs incurred were things like various gaskets, o-rings, fluids, etc..
doing a gze or 20v swap, my car wuold have been off the road for weeks if not months.. just ask the guys who've had that done..
(thanks to the ghetto tuning crew for helping out on both occasions)

even i at one point was contemplating an engine swap in my ae92... i looked at the gze and the silvertop. but like he said, ppl think about doing it, but in the end do they do it? not really.
with the hassle involved, the difficulty in finding parts and the cost...in the end it's not really worth all the headache. a better solution would be to rebuild the blue/redtop u have now and bring life back to it. some head work and minor cams will make u a happy camper

Dont get me wrong, if the AE86 was my project car Id go GZE just to keep up with other "faster" cars on and off the road course, but in a daily driver/weekend toy it doesnt make sence to have weeks of downtime, more expensive gas (Ive been filling up a 3S-GTE all summer with 94 ) and more expensive parts complicating something I need to get me to school/work and back.

a 16v is an ample platform to make the car go fast
