on a 4af when the timing belt breaks can it distroy the valves. i think the trem is free floating vavles. also does anyone have a wire diagram of this engine, cuz some where it causing my alternator not to charge the battery. The battery, break light come on but does not cuz the lights on the car to get brighter etc.! i got a new battery and alternator, it stoped the problem but keeps coming up ever so often. also another problem is that teh car keeps getting stuck on fast idol. the idol adjustment doesn't seem to work any more. but after a few mintues is goes back to normal then starts up again. any solutions on how to fix it. ( a new engine is out of the question student budget!) really starting to hate carb engine! anyways any help is greatly need.

Your question is confusing, what exactly is happening with your electrical system. You said the alt. is not charging the battery (I get that part) but you got a new alt. and bat. so it isn't happening anymore? So what's the problem now? something about the lights not getting brighter??
As for the wiring diagram, if you are looking online or something, one problem might be the engine code you are looking for. You said you have a 4af and you are "starting to hate carb engine". If you have an older corolla with a carberated engine, than it must be a 4A-C, not a 4A-F, the F stands for fuel injection. Hope this helps a little. Clarify your question and maybe I could help some more

4AF is carb'ed, 4AFE is fuel injection

the F means high efficiency head

4AC is single cam, 4AF/4AFE is twin cam, but scissor gear type

yeah sorry about wording that question . the question i had was that if 4af had "floating valve" so in case the timing belt brakes it wouldn't distory the vavles like the vw. it would just stall on the road. i found the electric problem in my car it was the main power wire was broke after the choke in the engine. i was able to get the wire diagram from a guy at toyota so it all good now.

So for people who have the problem i have with the battery and break light coming on i have the answer for you. it too me 7 months figure out the problem. first check teh battery and alternator if there all good then check the plug for the alternator make sure there two sets of power coming from it on with the car is on acc and when it on. also check the oil light sensor if that is bad it causes the battery and break light to light up, i think this is only for 4-af engine. then finally which was my problem was teh main power wire. it was giving power but not teh full amount so i had to make a new one and connect to the old one so it got full power, but don't cut the old one off cuz else where in teh engine it still need that power( like for teh 4af the choke uses that wire also. )
anyways thank again.

I am almost %100 sure that all of Toyota's engines are "non interferance" I snapped the belt on my 4A-GE and didnt have any worries.
