Slow reverse engage

I was riding in my friend's corolla the other day and when he shifted into reverse, and hit the gas the tranny shook the whole car taking a few seconds to engage. It also happened today. He drives a 95 DX w/ auto tranny. I did a quick drain and fill on his tranny and the old fluid came out looking like strawberry milk. Kinda whitish and all, pretty nasty. But do you guys have any ideas besides just leaving it like that?

throw in some oil, run the car a bit around the block, drain and then refill. it should get a bit cleaner.
