prevent auto tranny from downshifting?

To and from work I have a large mountain I pass over. As you all know when you go down a hill and build up speed then hit the breaks the tranny downshifts to slow you down.

Except it is irriatating listening to it every day. I'd rather change my brakes more often then letting the tranny downshift and then upshift again. Can't it stay in top gear and let the brakes slow the vehicle down.

So I'm seeing if there is a mod or a pin switch that would deactivate this highspeed downshifting. happens around 70-80 mph for my driving style.

I have a 2004 corolla with 94k on it, I have chainged tranny fluid at 60k and I'm the second owner since 28k miles. My wife primarily drives the car, except on days we carpool.

Any mod's out there to turn this function off?

Im pretty sure there is not.
Thats what the tranny was designed to do.

When you press the brakes, the car slows down, and the tranny will adjust accordingly.

If you just coast, and don't hit the brake, the tranny will not downshift, but at the same time, you will not slow down, which is something that you need to do when going down a mountain.

edit:

as an after though, don't let it upshift. turn Overdrive off, and then you won't go into 4th, you would stay in third, forcing you to go slower.

Is this normal for this model? Most autos don’t downshift when going down hill unless the speed is low. What speed is the car going when the trans downshifts, perhaps the O/D is dropping out or the torque converter is becoming unlocked.

My post assumes he is braking going down and going from the 70 - 80 MPH to 15 - 25 MPH.

Maybe Im over estimating the size of this mountain.

the tranny would not shift, and you would be saving gas, plus still be able to brake.

I say give it a try.

As long as he doesn't hit the gas before he shifts, there should be no problem.
AKA - No neutral drops.

But yeah, in the rain, I keep my overdrive off to keep me in the lower gear.
In the snow, I keep it in first, maybe second.
