Headgaskets

so I have heard that using the 7afe headgasket on a 4af/4afe motor will increase the compression. Any reason I shouldn't do this? Anything extra I will have to do rather than just put it in like the 4af one?

I wouldn't do it. just because it isn't made for your specific engine model. Might be other problems you won't encounter for awhile.

yeah but it's meant for the A block, so I can't see why it wouldn't work. It was suggested the last time I did the headgasket. It's also an easy way to get a little more compression out of it which is cool since I plan to stay N/A

I dont think the 4A and 7A head gaskets are different. Even if they are, the change is so minute there isnt going to be gains there. Think about something else to increase compression. Like pistons.

ugh you missed the point, even if it's small and almost pointless... I have to replace the headgasket anyways, where as I don't need to replace the pistions

it was a few guys on here that told me the 7a headgasket is thinner than the 4a ones.

if it's more expensive than the $40 4a headgasket then screw that, but if it's the same price and increases the compression even just a little and does no harm, walla I'll do it

thinner yes.. 4A-F gasket is 1.5mm, the 7A-FE gasket is I think 1.25mm, really drastic difference we got there. I mean sure, change it with the thinner one, but dont expect to feel the difference anywhere.

When you change the gasket, have the head skimmed also.

well I am planning on doing what you suggested. Putting the newer 4afe head on my block, only thing I can't remember is if you said my intake manifold would fit or not.

Won't be for another few months since I won't have the cash to have the head cleaned and redone when I do the headgasket this month

its not a new idea, we've been doing 3S/4A head swaps all the time here. Its not exactly as easy as A-B-C, but its not that hard either. One thing you have to remember is that the new and old 4A-FE have different timingbelts aswell...
Easiest is ofcourse a swap between the same generation engines.

I'd do it I did the same thing on my 4AGE, I had to replace the HG anyways, so I bought a .8mm one instead of a OE spec 1.0mm one for the same price. Couldn't hurt, was my philosophy as well

well yeah 2 people said it's not worth it, but the headgasket is blown anyways lol.

Sure I may not feel it but if I do a bunch of small things that make no difference on their own than eventually it will add up
