well i try to get all my parts from uap/napa or a parts store of the like, but if i need a dealer only part, then i first scrounge the junk yards, if i can't find it there, then call up the dealer

a lot compared to what? the junkyard. that's it.
If you want "toyota" parts, there is only one price, the dealer price (besides the junkyard). Any other shop that carrys the toyota parts is either going to be the same price or more, not any less, because they have to buy it from toyota too. That's how you check if you are getting rippped off for parts from a shop, check their price against the Toyota dealer's price for the part(s).
you're right, i was comparing it to the junkyard, which is completely different, and shouldn't be compared.
I know that when my handle broke in the corolla, we could have gotten it from a junkyard for 5 bucks or dealer for 20, so that's 4x the price. but it is new, and u don't have to spend all day looking for it.
If you are a good Toyota customer. You can always ask for a discount, they may give you 15% off to cover the Gouge and Steal and PS Taxes. Other garages probably get 30% off.
