So I guess I officially became a member of a very special group of car enthusisasts...a group that that values certain aspecs of cars often overlooked by others...(their loss) - if someone has to explain to you what an AE86 means to its owner, they'll never understand.

I was first introduced to the corolla through initial d two years ago (like most white guys :p ) But that was only an introduction. I always thought it looked kinda ugly in the anime and who wants a 17 year old car?

Initial D led me to club 4AG where I read and absorbed everything I could for almost two years, I have a binder full of printouts of moto's tech section, 20v swaps, engine differences, intro to drift, light tunning guides etc etc etc...everything I could read. I was there to learn drifting but as time wore on, the car apealed to me more and more, but owning one was just a pipe dream.

Months ago I ordered a copy of Option Video #32...the hachi roku special. Ive seen the tape over 30 times (no lie...i watch it 1-2 times per week) and that was my fire. I knew I wanted one...I got my japanese friend to translate everything for me, and I read moto's write up of the Iida Akira 100,000# AE86 buildup (my fav part)

I learned just how special these cars were to their owners...fast? no. Performance monster? no. Fun....well if someone can dump that much money into a 17 year old car (when he could buy something newer) It only makes sence that a race car driver knows what he wants in a car.

Fast forward to TN...by far the best site yet because its small, and you guys like to track your cars. Lafora knows his stuff and doesnt sugar coat it. Kaz knows how to put together one gorgeous hatch, and voodoo taught us where not to get body work done. Aaron has been the biggest help by far, I harass him daily for AE86 knowledge, anything I can learn about the cars, the culture and the guys who own them.

Im happy to say that i took ownership of a very nice 1986 Black Corolla GTS. Ill post the details, problems (not really any right now) and picture when I get the chance, so far it runs so well, im really happy. She got an oil change, cap rotor and plugs (wires are in the mail) and it just loves to rev, im so happy.

Ill be in Toronto this weekend,...Friday and Saturday with the hatch. Id like to meet as many of you as I can on saturday...anywhere in or around markham is good for me. Even if its just for 30 mins id like to see some of your 86's in person.

Thanks for reading, sry its kinda long, its just been a great day

From what I can see, looks good for a 17 year old car...Theres so much undercoating that you cant touch anything without ruining a shirt. Minor spots on the body...Im looking forward to grinding them out with my new dremel then painting over.

congrats.. your story of how you developed an ae86 obsession sounds almost exactly like mine. .except i didn't have a japanese friend to translate anything for me

one thing you might wnat to take a quick look over is the cooling system.. i've heard a story or two of over enthusiastic 86ers blowing headgaskets (ahem, sam)..

probably wouldn't hurt to flush the coolant anyway.. who knows how long its been in there

All fluids were done 2.5 years ago...(100,000 highway kms ago) tranny, coolant etc.

I kept an eye on the temp gauge and its well within spec and the resevoir is topped off.

Anything else I should look for...

The last owner got it two years ago with 150km, original motor, with all fluids changes and in good shape.

He lived one hour from ottawa and commuted to work there almost every day and put 100,000 kms on it...all highway clicks (i know this because i had to make the drive to go pick it up) and its now at 250,000 with new brakes, clutch and brake cyl, exhaust, tires (winter and summer) alternator, sunroof, battery, and a few other parts, along with 2 spare headlight motors (one working, one not) aftermarket muffler (givin it to aaron) 2 struts, cd player and speakers.

The clutch grabs hard, but the tranny grinds going into 3rd if its redlined. First gear is so peppy, all the other gears are kinda `economy`car-ish
