Hi i live in NJ and i took my newly bought corolla (2001 LE) for state inspection. There the guy told me that the car passed the inspection but he advised me to take it to a mechanic and get the brakes checked and repaired. Now i wanna do it ASAP coz i dont want to and dont like to have any flaws in my car.. So i wanted to know how much would it cost and where should i take it. There is a Toyota showroom, there is MIDAS and there is Pep Boys close to my house.. Also there is a Gas station which has a Auto garage with it..
Please advise me.. "Cost and where"

Talk to your neighbors and co workers, see who they trust in your area. Keep in mind if you go to the cheapest place you'll probably get chepo parts and may end up with a brake squeal.
OK so do you think a toyota dealer would be better at this time.. And no he did not say what was wrong with the brakes..
That's kind of goofy. If they're not squealing then I don't see what could be wrong with them considering the young age of the car. Do you get vibration when you hit the brakes at high speeds?
Anyway, I don't even think the stealership is the best place to go unless you're talking about a warranty. Why anyone would pay MORE to have their car worked on by trainees as opposed to taking it to a seasoned veterans shop whose livlihood is on the line I'll never know...

I dont mind taking it anywhere.. As long as the job is done good.. Well here is why i decided to take my baby to a doctor ().... LAst saturday i was driving in the city and i was hitting 50 mph.. I didnt see the lights and a camry was driving in front of me... The lights turned red and the camry hit the brakes (it was probably 20 meters in front of me) as soon as i realized that i need STOP to avoid nailing behind the camry i hit the brakes but the car took a while to stop just behind the car missing it by cms.. So then i realized that the response is really slow or what can i say even when i hit the brakes hard it didnt stop immediately.
Moreover, the guy who did the state inspection had to perform the brake test twice and told me that even in the second time it barely passed the brake test. So i decided to take it to a mechanic/garage/toyota service center/somebody to get this fixed.. So can anybody give me a rough estimate of how much would this probably cost.. Any rough idea would be helpful.. Also would any of you recommend MIDAS... ??????? THanks

If the Midas store is like the ones in this area I would avoid them like the plague. Have heard of two (one my neighbor) who got royally screwed claiming vehicles needed caliper replacement. Seriously doubt they were needed they were just padding the bill big time. Don't know mileage on your car but unless you have worn pads down past the wear sensors you should only need new pads and rear shoes and lubricate caliper pins. If pads are worn past wear indicator then you may need to replace front rotors as well. Regardless of where you go get a written estimate on the work needed and keep any parts that are replaced if you do get it fixed.

the brakes could be worn or somthing, the rotors worn, maybe miss adjusted or sumthing small, if they are disc they can where down real easy
thats true but it really does depend on whats rong, im assuming being a new car its disk and if all it needs is new pads then you could prob do that yourself, but if it need much more yea it would cost a bit
brake job can run u anywhere from 400-800 for all four wheels. from a independent shop. the stealer could be a little more.
I've never heard of a $800 brake job. Usually a shop will cost you around $120 to change the front pads, turn the front rotors, and adjust the rears which is all that's normally needed. If you need new rotors add about $100, and if you need calipers add about $100 per caliper. If you need rear drums somehow (highly doubtful at 80k) add about $75.
Odds are though you just need the front brakes replaced and the rears adjusted.

I have gone to Tire/Brake shops and have had quotes up to that amount. for rotors, pads, labor. Granted i dont let them work on my car, i just took it there to have them inspect them as they were acting up and then i did it myself. and no this wasnt on my BMW. It was on a american car if i remember right. New rotors will cost @100 each and pads will cost @65 for front and prolly the same for rears at those places. their markup rate is @100%
