Just recently took out my enine to simply change the back crack shaft seal because of a leak.
When i took off the sump pan i noticed some metal shreddings, some small like a screw head..but very flat. and other pieces long like 3/4 inch and thicker "kinda scary".
Im thinking that sumthing is eating away in there??
I did a compression test about 2 mths ago and all cylinders read 170.
What could the small metal pieces be?
what's the history of the car? maybe something blew up and only enough repair was done to get it running nice, but not all parts were cleaned out?
is there an oil pump sheild / splash sheild in these engines? maybe it was destroyed.. can the parts be reassembled to see what it might be? You wil have a missing part from wahtever blew.

Thats practically impossible...
looks like bearings to me :P I think you're gonna have to rebuild it, if there junk like that in the engine, it would be a good idea to check it all out.
so im gonna have to pull out pistons and crank shaft and all that drama...
i might as well buy another engine.!....The $$ in parts is probly gonna cost me the same $ anyway.????
what if the other engine is as bad? I mean buying used engines from japan is kinda iffy, because you dont have any guarantees on what the condition is. I'd just rebuild it, parts arent that expensive actually, just dont get them from toyota.

he said it was leaking and found the parts int he pan.. I took, that it it was running before he took the pan off? I doubt it was running if the bearing(s) were in pieces..
it would run, but you would have rod knock, it would progressively get worse and worse, till it would spin the bearing, seize and cause total engine loss.
honestly parts wont be terribly expensive, and like flash said, youll know what condition your internals are in if you rebuild it, you buy another engine, it could have the same problems or worse. you crack open the engine, youll know your in good shape, and you could even use it as an excuse to throw in some goodies while its open.
the oil pan is off, grab the big ends of the rods see if theres play drop bearings check the condition (watch for torque to Yeild bolts = have to replace), pull the valve cover check there,
the funny thing is that i dont think that screw came from inside the engine i have never seen a screw like that used inside an engine...
also what kinda metal is it if its magnetic (steel or iron) i would doubt its from your engine.. on the other hand if its aluminum id take a better look

hey well i havent been here in a while so ill just update youll....
yes the bearing closest to the flywheel spun causing the bering to shell out, it actually damaged the casing its in.
Anyway im buying a 20V Blacktop head and block with computer and harness. It needs new rings, so im going to change rings and bearings one time. But im finding it very hard to find parts online.
There is no store in my country that sells these parts so i must either buy from toyota or online. www.toysport has parts but im not sure how reliable that website is?
anyway here are some things i need to buy for the build, if im missing ayhting let me know
Rings, Rod & main bearing, head gasket, front and rear crankshaft seal.
Im only changing valve seals if its necessary because im low on cash.
but i need to know about websites where i can find parts? please help me there.
It's cheaper to buy a kit and send the crank out for cutting and the block to be bored... if you know how to mic the cylinders out yourself,, then they may only need honed. If they are out of round, then send the block to get bored and honed. You first need to find out what oversized pistons and rings (or just bearing) are offered for the engine. If it's a known good engine and only needs bearings,, you still need to mic the crank and see if it needs the journals cut and and then order the bearing for 0.20 or 0.30 over whatever size the cut will be. Or find a short block and exchange...
good luck..
if it's high mileage then you may want to send the head out to be rebuilt too. With the engine in pieces it is a huge opportunity to replace all kinds of stuff at one time...

well...the block doesnt need to be rebored, but im going to rehone and polish it anyways. the crank has no damage besides surface rust which im polishing off and the bearings that are there, dont have much ware, but im changing them anyway.
does anyone have experience with www.toysport.com because they seem to be the only website i can find all my parts on, but it looks kind of unreliable.
