i know that most of you are absolutely in love with the 86.
not only are u guys in love, u guys also own, deal with and fix all the problems that may arise from having an antique automobile...
my question is... why is it so popular? it has mac strut front and doesnt even have indipendant rear susp. but having driven one, i must say they are extremely fun cars...absolutely no comparison to the newer ae92. but that being said, why is there no love for the ae92 and ae101? it seems that most people who are AE enthusiasts only take a liking to the 86 and the 111. why?
where's the love for the qu-ni's?! *cries out to the sky*

Different strokes for different folks, imports, domestics, na, turbo, honda, toyota - all of them have fan bases.
I guess those corolla's just arent common/fast/supported *enough* to be really popular. Maybe if there were more club races, aftermarket, animes :p about them you'd feel the love.
The DA9 argument is a good observation, maybe they seem sportier to most people...more so then a corolla
after driving a EL on the track, i know why i love my 86
the EL brings no drama. nothing. if i wanted to ride a train, i'd take a via thank you.
note i didn't say it wasn't fast. it was. it gripped awesome, it handled ok, and it stopped awesome.
but it was very blah.
gonna see if i can ask the dood for another boot around fabi this time i see him. he has a thicker rear sway bar, so hopefully that'll spice things up abit.
but i'm not getting my hopes up.
fast, yes
fun, not really
that's the key i think between a FF, and a FR. any car can be made to go fast, but the fun is in her soul.
having said that i'd love to toss a miata around on the track

sooooo why is there such a small enthusiast following for the ae92/101 and yet there is a large following for the ae111? they are all ff and they all came with lsd in japan(top models anyway). i'm sure they all go quite equally fast...
....but i must agree on the miata part...i'd love to own a gen1 miata...turbo that shit, pop on a lip and sport some 14x8 panasports...hell ya

yep.. it's all about fun factor for me.. my vw is much faster, better looking, newer, quieter, has a/c, a radio, huge brakes, etc etc.. but its no where near as fun
even if its jsut driving to work, the response and balance of my ae86 just makes it fun.
light, high revving, fr configuration.. i can't think of another car with those attributes that's within my budget..

on that note i'd like to play the devil's advocate.
why out of ALL cars available in the land of the rising sun, was THIS car used in the anime.
you don't see the creator using a fuckin yugo do you?
on a side note:
the japanese embraces initial D for what it is. true there are more ppl that loves the car for what it is over there than there is over here (translation: it didn't take an anime to heighten the car's popularity), but you don't see the guys there bashing the anime or the ppl who just so happen to both own a AE86 or a R32 who just HAPPENS to be an avid ID vid game player as well per se
just shows the fucked up mentality of SOME of the people who are in the "scene" over here.

I think the Initial D association is something that has gotten out of hand. What's the huge hang-up about an anime anyway? It's entertainment. So what if someone buys a car because they saw it in a cartoon? As long as they realize that it IS a cartoon and can differentiate reality from it, then it's all good.
I know someone who has a car that looks just like Takumi's. But I see him working on his car all the time and he tracks his car often. For him, it's car enthusiast first, Initial D fan second.
I'm constantly working on my car when I have time to. But I watch my InitialD vcd's every so often, I quote lines from the anime and sometimes play the arcade game.
For me, my limited experience behind the wheel of my car has told me that for what it's worth, it's a lot of fun not only to drive, but the work on. The motor feels and sounds great; the gearing is perfectly tuned with the motors power; and you can't beat the fun of pop-up head lights
It's the people who are screwed up not the show (ID), actually, many who watched the show got interested and started actually gaining knowledge about the cars, personally after watching a couple episodes I got on Club4ag and read their reference section and from there I never looked back, I just kept reading up on all types of cars, ae92s, 240s...etc, I'm eager to learn more about these cars that everyone loves. If I were to buy one I wouldn't expect to be drifting every night against FDs and Skylines. So in a way Initial D was good because it opened alot of doors for many people. But about those who are into this whole ae86= unbeatable drift machine, these are the same people that watch FnF and go out to race their cars and run into trees, there will always be idiots like that.
