I have a 2004 Corolla, 52K miles, just got transmission fluid flushed a week ago, & air filter replaced...
however, recently when I turn on the car and put it in drive, when it goes form Park to Reverse on the way to shift to Drive, it makes a grunting sound..... kind of a stiffness... does anyone know what this is due to?

Does this happen to anyone else? or does anyone know how I can get this fixed?
I have not changed the engine coolant or air conditioning filter / cabin filter since the purchase of the car.....

Hey, the noise is coming from the front, however once the noise comes and i shift it around from reverse to drive, drive to park, back to reverse, it will stop. It wont make it anymore, however, the cycle of CLUNKING noise repeats when car turns on again...
maybe it is the parking paw engauge/disengauge sound??? is it evey time you change from p to r the sound will come out or it will come out only certain time (ie: when you are on a slope)? did you have a habit of using hand brake when you park you car? or you just leave the transmission to p without using handbrake when you park?
I just realized I have started to park on a slope, and this only happens when i park on the slope.... it does not happen when i moved my car on the flat surface... should I still be worried about this.. or be worried when I park on the slope?

and yes, I always use my hand break when I park on a slope, even sometimes when I park in general....

so it's just normal sound then....no need to worry.......what course that sound is the force of the car are in the parking paw, when you move from park to r, the parking paw are disengauge roughly (since the whole vehicle mass are rest on the paw) and create that sound. next time if you don't want that sound come out when you park on a slope, put it on neutral first, then apply the hand brake firmly, and if the car won't move after that, then switch to park.
like what you said you did apply hand brake while you park on the slope, maybe because you didn't apply firmly, so the car can still move slowly until it's weight are rest on the parking paw....so make sure you set the hand brake firm next time when you park....
if you don't care about it and just leave it like that (park without apply hand brake firmly), the parking paw will wear out sooner and so does your engine mount.
Just an idea, here....but....are you sure it's not (for lack of better words) "brake groan", which many automatic trans cars experience when "creeping" against the applied brakes (virtually stopped but crawling slightly) ? It's not uncommon and is normal- hopefully your complaint is of the normal/no problem sort...
It was actually to do with the way I park, i usually held on the brake and then put it in park, released the brake and then put the hand break on..... it does not make the sound anymore when I do it the following way (thanks to EA):
Holdon to the break, put on the hand breaks, and then put it in park....
THANKS TO EVERYONE, I REALLY APPRECIATE IT
