When chaniging oil in my daughter's 2006 Corolla, I loostened the drain plug & replaced the filter but forgot to drain the pan (that's a 1st). Anyway, I added the oil, tightened everything back up. I checked level & it looked wrong so I drove it 3-4 miles to circulate the oil through the system. The oil level was still high & it finally dawned on me what I did so I drained it all out & added the right amount. All seemd perfect but then the car started hesitating when accellerating from a dead stop or when turning a corner. Any ideas on what I screwed up?
My oil change(including filter) should take 3.9 Quarts. I just use 4 and I have never have had a problem. It's only an extra .1 quart, and my dipstick reads a ;little high, but still within the marks.
If your fill needed 4.5 quarts, and you added 5, you *might* have a problem.
(i don't know the numbers for your year.
But as final gear said, it all depends on how much extra you put in.
the capacity is 3.7qts. So filling to 4 is kind of overfilling...but as long as you check the dipstick, no worries.
I always put 3.5 in, it reads exactly in the middle on the dipstick. I do this with any car that requires something like 3.7, including my nissan sentras.
Putting double the amount of oil in the engine isnt very healthy, especially driving with it.
FYI, oil level doesnt set by driving the car, the pump is working when the engine is running. Two mins should be enough for the oil to circulate and if theres problems that two mins will minimize any damage and you can inspect for leaks at the bottom pan. Just a tip for next time.
Hey there!
There is a fluid called "engine flush" I used once for an old truck I used to have. One drains one's oil, replases it with the "flush," and runs the thing for a bit. Then drains the "flush" out...and replaces it(and the filter) with new oil. It worked for my truck's engine...all hesitation and filth was removed...and the truck lasted me a long time.

Just in case, also check your air filter. You stated no smoking out exhaust, so I don't think you overfilled to point of the oil getting aerated (foamy) by the crank hitting it and the oil getting sucked into intake. Extreme cases I've heard of is that piles of oil end up in intake, soaking filter, catching fire. But this is extreme case, and it would be preceeded by huge billowing smokescreen out of tailpipe of oil being burned in engine. Just to be safe, open up the airfilter & examine it.
Flashmn was right. I ended up putting double the oil in. I only drove the car 4 miles with the double oil but yet after correcting the level, I now get a hesitation when accellerating. I did check the air filter and it was ok. The car is a 2006 Corolla with only 5,800 miles. Does anyone know if there is a fix for the hesitiation.
