Help with Check Engine Light

I have an 89 Corolla Wagon, 4A-F (Carb). The manual says where the check engine light should be, and I pulled the dash apart today and there is no bulb there, and the hole is covered by the plastic backing (factory installed, it's all one piece on the back of the cluster, and includes contacts for the other bulbs, etc). In other words, it looks like it didn't have a check engine light from the factory. Check it out... http://www.waytoogood.com/Corolla/CheckEngine.htm

The other issue I have is that the factory service manual says to jump the jump T and E1 connectors on that check box in the second picture. I don't have both a T and E1, no wire even going to one of them. In fact, I only have 3 wires coming into the bottom of that whole box.

Anyone know if maybe the wagon is wired differently and how to check the computer codes???

Man, I almost wish I had a carbed engine, so easy to work on and mod...
You guys need to slap some webbers on that shit!
My dad's '76 BMW 2002 4-banger with a 4-on-the-floor has a webber carb and I love that thing, it loves to scream to the red-line.
