4A-GE oil coolers

i have noticed that 4A-GE's have engine oil coolers on them. and i have a few questions.

- How much oil does a 4A-GE take im guessing 3.5 to 4 litres?

-Does the coolers seem to actually do anything or are they useless?

- How does the block adapter thing trigger to circulate? is it oil pressure or is it oil temperature that triggers it?

Im asking because on my 7afe after driven hard i notice that the oil pressure drops off about 4-5 psi and in a few cases i have noticed oil consumption im not sure if this is related to the crappy PCV system or if its due to the oil thinning?!?!?

Anyways i have a cooler block sitting in my work room and may install it and see if it helps!

if your cooler does work i would think cold oil would be better for your engine. heat breaks down oil and its viscousity ( dont know the spelling) but yea keeping it cooler helps why do you think the rad is there keep engine temps down. i like my cooler i need to replace the line cause there old but knowing my oil dosent get to 200+ in temp makes me feel good.

I didn't think the cooler had a valve to send the oil there when it was hot, thought it was an always thing.

They do cool the oil, just as some cars have them for auto transmissions, some without burn up faster, such as our firebird :|

Since you have one already I'd say install it, Once I start modding my motor I am going to throw one on with a better rad

i bleive the valve is shut until a certain Pressure is reached, it remains shut when low pressures are pressent so that you dont loose oil pressure At an idle... They do work, Just when u need them to.. How well they work, i dunno..

there's no valves in the cooler itself.....

i've never heard of there being a valve in the block adapters..... i've taken many apart and never seen anything like that (though, i've never looked)....

from what I've seen in them (the adapters) when i take them apart..... there is a shorter threaded shouldered bolt than what the standerd oil filter bolt is.... it threads to the block with the first 1/2 of the adapter plate attached.... then the 2nd 1/2 bolts onto the block and has the longer threaded bolt for the filter to screw on to (this "bolt" threads into the shouldered bolt that threads into the block)....

there is a reason for the 2 halves..... from what i've seen, the upper 1/2 has the oil cooler line.... so the oil flows through the block, through the 1/2st half, through the filter, then through the 1/2 half... which then makes it run through the cooler line.... the return line doesn't feed through the adapter, but to the top of the oil pan....

another reason i'm not sure that there are valves is because of 2 things..... the coolers in the aw11's (adapters are identical to ae92's and almost identical to the ae86 adapters... i have multiple of all) are water cooled..... having the temp of the oil closer to the temp of the coolant helps get everything up to temp faster and it's a more efficient cooler when up to temp..... 2nd reason... in the 5sfe's they redesigned the coolers.... there are no external lines, just an adapter with 2 coolant lines running to it..... which if there was a valve in that then there would be no circulation at all....

Heres the deal, before theres more misinformation.

AE92's have oilcoolers here in europe, all of them, even the 4A-F. Due to extreme speeds on german highways and high engine rpm.

The AE92 oil cooler isnt like most oilcoolers which circulate oil all the time, the AE92 oil cooler only circulates it with pressure. Theres a ball valve in the filter adapter.
It has its down sides, during winter when you idle not alot of oil is going through it. then when you accelerate, you'll notice engine temp gauge goes down very fast because the very cold oil in the cooler circulates into the oilpan and engine.

Oh and toyotaspeed, theres only one bolt that goes through the filter adapter into the block, its longer than the bolt for no oil cooler.

And yes, theres no waterlines there.

Its a very weird system, I changed the core with a mocal, because the toyota core is crappy.

Drain and refill with an empty oilcooler is 4.1liters iirc.

yeah im familiar with both systems mentioned the water block system like on my dads gen3.5 camry, what i have is the system off the AE92 GTS that works with the small radiator up front.

Its wierd because the sub-oil pan on the 7a-fe has a bolt hole thats currently plugged where the return banjo fitting thing goes and it fits perfect (same thread) I think that in other markets europe, japan the 7a-fe probably has a cooler, i might give it a go, only thing is i need a new heat exchanger as corrosion has killed the used old one i have
