I have a 2001 Corolla 1.4 which knocks on acceleration unless revs are kept above 2500. This happened some 2 years ago when the workshop installed a new ‘brain’ as no fault showed up on the computer. This cured the problem about 90% of the time until now. As the cost of replacing the engine management unit again is about half the value of the car, any advice would be very much appreciated.

By brain, do yhou mean ECM?

Do you have a CEL?

It's going to come down on how much you are willing to spend to get it fix. Just keep your options open and have a set amount on how much your willing to spend. Also look into doing a motor swap, if the price is right....
