The transmission gods hate me.

Hello all, I am fairly new here. First of all, am I correct in assuming that the drive train on a geo prism is the same as that of a Corolla? If so, I need help. I've got a bad transmission fluid leak on a 96 Geo Prism. It only leaks while the car is running and leaks about 1/2 quart an hour. It is not coming from the pan gasket, but from somewhere higher on the rear of the tranny where I can't quite see. What are some of the common places to develop leaks?

I have the same car 96 corolla with 5 speed auto 1.8, check the main seal where the engine and tranny meet. That's alot of fluid and those tranny's work very hard. Be very careful, you could end up with a rebuild if not careful for $1200 or so. Valvoline Max life Dex with seal conditioner works well for me. When you find the leak and fix it, do a complete flush you probably have black tranny fluid that is burning because it is working so hard. The whole system holds about 9 quarts I believe.

Shoot, thats what I was afraid of. I tried some stop leak and it worked for about a week, but now it's leaking pretty bad again. The engine has got to be pulled to get the main seal, correct? Also, I am going to clean everything up under there and see if I can find the actual point of leakage, do the tranny cooler lines hook up on the back of the transmission?

Yes I believe the engine has to be pulled, but you can go to an auto parts store and take a peak at the Haynes manual. The trans cooler line come out the front, follow them to you radiator, you will see them go into the bottom of the radiator.
