NGK Iridium too hot for 96 corolla?

I was hoping someone might now this answer. I have a stock 96 corolla with 1.8 and auto trans. Car runs great, maintained great. Last night I switched to NGK racing wires and NGK Iridium XI spark plugs from copper core auto lites and my engine is running about 5-10% hotter. I did it just becaue I want maintenance free plugs and got a good deal on Ebay. The guy at the part stores says it's because of the Iridium plugs? Any thoughts? Should I be concerned since no my cooling fan is coming on more often? I am not looking to street race, I love my rolla and want it to last over 200k, currently at 175k?

P.S. Service tech at toyota said should be ok, but may set off check engine.

well no... if the heat range is the same as the one in your other plugs...

if they are hotter, the plugs can start to overheat and detonate, but they wont heat up the combustion process.

if you're using the gauge to analyze it, its futile, its very inaccurate. However it may be a sign of pending cooling problems. Have you checked your coolant level lately?

Thanks for the quick reply. Coolant is good, flushed 10k miles ago, level is actually slightly high. NGK is closed in states now, so I will call tomorrow. ND is OEM and their heat range is 16, but they said heat ranges are not standardized between mfgs. It just weird that until last night my needle was always below the half mark unless extremly hot outside, today temp. is mild and it's running over half with cooling fan coming on more often than normal. Guy at the parts store said to verify the range, because if too hot could fuse plugs to head.

Umm.. well the numbers are different, but theres crossrefrence...
Whats the number of the NGKs? 6 should be fine. 5 Is standard on the older 4A-FE, but might be on the hot side.
I'm running 7's on my turbo-rolla.

I just checked the cross reference guide and they match ok. ND tech support told me all of their plugs were ok, their Irdium cross matches against my NGK Iridium so I should be good. I would post it here for future reference, but I don't see how I can. I went ahead and disconnected the batter to reset the ECU just to see if that helps. I think that should reset the ECU?

it should, but I dont see how resetting the ecu would affect temps.

I installed NGK Iridium in a 97 Corolla w/ the 7AFE and Automatic in the past. No issues with it. Make sure they are gapped properly. Check the NGK website for the proper gap.
