93 DX Tranny and Running probs

OK, so I searched and even opened several hundred threads looking for specifics, no luck.
A few weeks ago, my daughter's wagon started running rough, starts OK but it seemed like it was going to die, like running rich. Also started having tranny issues.
Engine is a 1.8 7afe. Stored code value is 31, MAP sensor, installing a new one tonight. But, on the way home Sunday, the 'O/D OFF' light started flashing. O/D was still working, but I seem to have lost 2nd gear. Have to use 1st(actually put it in 1st) to get moving, then shift up, but now have lost 2nd so it's harder to get to speed.

Neighbor is a transmission guy, said probably computer related, and I have no reason to doubt him, just wanted some reassurance. Has anyone else seen similar problems?

Computer also ordered from parts place, but wanted to wait until I see if the MAP sensor cures anything.

As for rough running check and replace if needed: air filter/plugs/wires /cap /rotor/ fuel filter. As for tranny when was last time fluid was changed? Drop the pan clean the magnets and pan replace gasket and do a refill. The O/D light is possibly a solenoid in the tranny or a relay in the circuit. Doubt that the computer is the culprit. Toyota computers seem very reliable it's most likely a sensor connected to it such as a solenoid that is causing the problem.

Plugs just replaced, air filter, changed oil and filter, Trans fluid, etc. done a year ago.

Installed new MAP sensor last night and the engine seems to have cleared up. Still no 2nd gear, nothing there, just shifts from 1st to 3rd. Overdrive is still working.

Can the solenoid be repaired(replaced) while still in the car?

Will check underneath tonight for anything strange. She ran over a curb a few weeks ago, maybe dislodged something.

Thanks for the reply.
