Canada What Kind of Fuel, Regular or Premium?

Hello.

We own two corolla's, (canadian models)

One is a "CE", the other a "S" model. both 2005.
Now we are thinking of buying a "XRS" 2005 or 2006.

I was wondering if this XRS model requires premium fuel? The cars we have (CE, S) run on regular. I think it states premium fuel in wikipedia for the XRS, however i cannot confirm this on toyota's webpage as they no longer have the XRS since it was discontinued.

Can someone confirm this please?

Some links to where you found the info would also be nice.

Thanks.

I have a BMW that says use premium, but I'm an avid listener to Car Talk, and they've convinced me to switch to regular. It's been about a year now, and I can't detect any difference except for how much it saves me. Here's a link to their discussion, you'll need to decide for your self:

Good luck!

The XRS does require premium gas.

Thanks for the link.

I understand the difference between regular and premium, and the link you provided is actually a little bit innacurate as higher octane has nothing to do with power ( which they sorta imply).
In order to keep this on topic, i wont go into much detail but octane wont provide power it just prevents engine knock, in that it wont autoignite like regular gas within the higher compression engines (googling will confirm this). Lets try and keep this from an octane debate.

Regardless of wether i should use it or not, I just need to know what does toyota state as the type of fuel to use for the XRS?

I am sure this is listed in the XRS car manual, but since I cant find it anywhere online, I thought I would ask on this forum, as there are bound to be some XRS owners who visit this forum

UPDATE: i just saw the other two posts.. thanks guys for the links.

the 2ZZGE motor in the XRS is a hi compression motor therefore it requires the higher octane gas, the 1ZZFE motor in the S and CE is not a hi-comp motor hence the reason why they get away with regular gas.

The motor in the XRS is a totally different beast, used in the Celica GTS, Matrix XRS and recently in the Lotus Elise.

Higher octane fuel will not make any more power by it self. But it does allow your car to run more timing/boost. Which in then end usually nets more power.

It says "premium fuel only" on the fuel lid and the user manual for 2ZZ-GE XRS. Using regular and revving over 8000 rpm can cause severe damage to the engine (pre-detonation).
