Canada Heat shield

So on my 93 rolla do I need to keep the heat shield or can I remove it..what's it's purpose really? I'm replacing my rad soon because it's really old and not doing it's job as effectively anymore..once I put in the new one and it doesn't let the engine overheat as much and as quickly anymore, does that mean I can remove the heat shield since it won't be as hot anymore or am I talking about two things that don't have anything to do with each other?

Sure? So I just unscrew those like 6 or so nuts from the heat shield and it comes off?
