Tapets noisy

Hi all,

1.6 corolla RSI 20V
quick question, my lifters / tapets are making a noise at low revs. tick tick ticking sound. I am told you cannot stop this as they are auto adjusting. Is this true? I dont see that it can be because they give the valve clearance setting in the users manual?

Thanks

I have an 04' with the 1.8L (purchased new) 79K miles
Mobile 1 oil changes. Sometimes my lifters sound diesel like.
Took it to 2 dealers. Both said its normal.
If I still have this car @100K miles i will have the lifters adjusted.
Hope that helps.

Thanks, that does help, but to confirm, you are saying that the lifters can actually be adjusted then? Contrary to what some people have told me? Is the procedure using a feeler gauge?

What lifters... there are no adjustable lifters in a 20V. You adjust them by shimming the buckets.

Theres shim disks either on top of the bucket (most cases like this) or underneath (usually built in, vitz/echo/yaris) Now you check the clearance with the feeler gauge and then install a shim thats gives you the correct clearance, either buy replacing the shim ontop of the valve bucket or replacing the whole bucket.

Oh dear, i was worried it would be like that. that is hydraulic lifters right?

Lets say i check the clearance and one of them is out. how would i go about getting the correct shim to correct the valve clearance measurement.

Just another quick question - why do these lifters/tapets/whatever you call them become noisy if they are adjusted by oil pressure (they are adjusted by oil pressure right?)

Nope, they dont have hydraulic lifters.
They are not adjusted by oil.

If one of them is out of spec, then you just take the measurement and then measure the old one and get a new one with the combined measurement. Oh and btw are you sure its valve tick?

You may want to remove your oil filler cap to inspect to see if there is a plate beneath
the hole (where a funnel could rest)under the valve cover to see if it is making contact with a rocker arm.
