Silvertop 20V questions! Noob!

Hi! I am new here!

I have just swapped my old engine to a 4age Silvertop. Just a few questions.

- What should be the ampere rating of the fuse for the ECU?
- What is the problem for a "typewriter clicking" sound while the engine is running. Is this natural for Silvertops?
- What are the common problems if it consumes a lot of gas? could it be the float or gauge? I recently changed gas tank as well.

Thanks so much!

id have to whip out the multimeter for the fuze question, but

typewritter clicking may be the vvt cam, some used engines are sick, in my experience, they dont affect performance, just are noisy; and to replace its quite expensive for little gain.

however, poor fuel consumption; i ask; how is the output power? when i swapped in my silvertop it didnt feel any faster than my 4afc, and it was using double fuel and running very rich until i found a connection problem to the AFM.

When you had that problem with your AFM, were you running rich or was there a bit of black smoke when you run fast? What was the AFM problem?
How was your power output? mine pulls hard past 4k rpm still.

ECU fuse is 10A.

The tick is normal. It is the VSV as far as i know.

I had huge problems with black smoke and running rich off and on. Mine turned out to be a combination of an AFM problem and the ECU. It was inttermittant though and when it went, it really went wrong.

Make sure the AFM plug is on and connected properly.

BTW: if you want a spare AFM - you can pay for shipping from Australia and take mine off my hands

Thanks!

Someone had just told that it is 15A. And another said 20A. Now it's 10A.
I wonder what it could be?...

BTW, what's a VSV?

My rule of thumb: most wiring will handle 15-20A but if in doubt, put in a 10. If you keep blowing it, move up to 15. If that does the same thing you may have to llok at a 20A or you have a problem in your wiring. I'm 90% sure i had a 10A in the ECU. If you think about it though... the load on it is bugger all. Your stereo probably uses more load than the ECU does.

The VSV is the Vacum Switching Valve. I've just had a memory blank as to its exact purpose, but i do remember it ticking. Someone may be able to help me remember what it does exactly..

Thank you sir!

What is the best way to know whether the fuel gauge or float is defective?

You run out of fuel when it says you have half a tank left?

Really though - that is the only way to tell. But if you mean the guage goes down really slowly to 1/2 then drops really quickly - thats normal

Fuel level goes down fast. It only says after filling up about 11 lites of fuel, in about 60kms it's almost out.

Maybe the fuel gauge is faulty. we've already changed floats.

The fuel gauge is indicating a half full tank but when the float was removed the gas in the tank was more than half tank.

Great! What other problems did you experience?

What was your gas consumption with the ST?

just little niggely problems like leaking fluid and some electrical issues.

On a full tank (40ish Litres) when it was running well and i was driving aggressively i would be lucky to get 400-450km. In the country i could get around 600km off the tank. So not the best mileage, but it is a performance engine - so i expected that...

^^^ yeah the 20V's are gas guzzlers...But if you say you just put in a new gas tank, chances are the gauge might be bad as spud said.

If you want to check it, take out the gauge from the tank "leave it connected to the wires", and move the lever slowly up and down and check on the dash to see if it corresponds with your movements. If it does then its good, and you might want to check your AFM settings. Once no one turned the tension wheel inside the unit, and the air bypass screw is set to "i believe its" 13mm from the top, just take it out and give it a good cleaning, mine was really dirty and caused the flap to be a little stiff, and thats sumthing you want to be nice and loose. Just my .02
