just finished this weekend. thankyou baartman and brother for all the help, tools and driveway space. I gave it little road test and so far so good. except now I have a clunking noise after most turns( not load). anybody else experienced this noise after lowering or any suggestions what it might be.
with my car, if one of the rear springs isn't sitting on the bottom perch properly, a loud clunk is made during hard cornering.. it's quite a loud clunk when that happens..

the clunk definately comes from the left wheel well. during a lefthand corner.
I did it myself with sheet metal from crappy tire. I gotta patch up the inside with something still but it has to be able to withstand extreme heat. will bondo do the job?
clunking over bumps usually means your strut mounts are gone.. I should know better.. my suspension is only 1yrs old, KYB struts and APEX springs, and they started clunking at the beginning of the summer.. I'll get the KYB strut mounts as replacement. But if they're more $$$ than the OEM, then I'll just get the OEM ones.
I read that when you lower the AE86, you have to shorten a rod, (lateral rod I think) above the rear axel. Did you do this? If not, is your rear axel still centre? Aparently if you go too low, this rod will actually shove the axel out to one side. This may be where the clunking is comming from.

yeah.. the rubber on the mount has stretched to the point that it doesn't keep the strut rod tight.. therefore everytime the car goes over a bump, the strut rattles.

i don't think a un-centered rear axle housing will cause a clunking noise.. it might make your tire rub, tho..

make sure your upper shock bolts are tight, their should be two on each shock, one is a lock. The first time I did the springs in my car I had an anoying clunk, turned out to be one of my rear shock bolts. Check the 3 bolts on top of the front strut towers too while your at it.
Are the gland nuts tight that hold the struts in the casing?
You didn't lower it very much, so that's the only things that I could think that would be causing you grief.
As far as the lateral rod, well mine is lowered 70mm in the rear and the tires are perfectly centered.
