corolla hatch with mr2 engine

well i am looking at a corolla fx hatch , its kinda shady , it has been circulated around my area for quite some time now. i dont know much on the history but a friend of a friend is selling it and he wants $600 for it. he said it has a 88 mr2 engine in it . im not sure what the engine code is so if you guys could enlighten me? it has a 2.5" exhaust with straght through muffler , a CAI , and a few small mods like short throw shifter and pedals and little sh*t like that. now the battery is sitting in the back seat. as of right now the car does not start under the own power of the battery. you can push start it and jump it with cables but it wont turn over from the batterty power. now im not sure the mileage but its probably alot and its probably been quite abused but im not looking for long term car , i am inbetween cars and am looking for something to tool around in for a couple months. it also has a small oil leak coming from the lower left hand part of the block when you are looking in from the engine bay. im not sure what this part is but i am going to go back and look at it in more detail. the engine is a dohc 16 valve. he said the rear brake pads need to be replaced also. can any one give a couple opinions on this? i know i dont have many details but i have just started looking at toyotas. my main concern is the starting problem , is it the battery? the starter? i dont even know but any help or opinions would be great , thanks

it's an ae82..... mid 80's FWD corolla.... if it's an FX16 then it has the stock motor...... which, yes, is the same as the 88-89 mr2 motors (unless you're talking about the supercharged 4a-gze... which is a possibility)..... it's a bluetop 115hp 4a-ge (~7500rpm)

check it out... drive it and see how it pulls.... it should pull pretty good....
