I've got an 80 corolla with 3TC engine. I'm just beginning to modify it, and have some questions.
Any disadvantages to sidedraft vs. down draft? How about Solex vs. Weber? What's the mpg difference between 32-36, 38's, 40's and 45's? Not a big concern, but I drive a long way to work every day.
Cams. Since I'm just starting, probably a mid-grade cam. Recommendations? Anyone selling these parts?
-thanks
try contacting kpsxtyone on the hardcore forum, he's done a lot of mods on this motor, including the twin cam set-up (2TG). one of our friends run a 3TC motor with dual 45 sk's (or 48's can't remember?) that's been stroked to a 2L, kpsxtyone did that.
personally... i would turbocaharge that motor (3TC). running carbs would be hard to tune for novices coz u have to tune it all the time, ie. temp goes down = tune it., if it goes up = tune it again. i had a hard time with carbs coz i'm not good at it so i went fuel injection. goodluck!

Did you say turbocharge it? You know it's already carbureted, right? Is it hard to fit a turbocharger on it? I know cars, but haven't done much beyond basics. How much does a turbo cost for that car, and would I have to convert it to fuel injection? That's more than I'd want to get into, if so. I'll check with sxtyone. Thanks for the reply
TOUGH CHOICE! (but i'll try to tell u as much as i know)
CARBS.. before u buy a set carbs, u may wanna plan what u'r final set-up would be. if u'r looking at an all out mods, my friends use either a set of 45 webber's or 48 sk's. but i've seen Puerto Ricans run the 3TC with downdraft carbs that make high HP. these guys love this motor for drag coz it can take massive hp. they prefer it than the twin cam 2TG coz it's lighter and prolly cheaper.
PROS: motor can take a lot of abuse, parts availabilty (in US) is easy mostly in Florida, with dual side-drafts, motor sounds amazing.
CONS: tuning carbs for novices is VERY hard. i'm assuming u'l be driving this everyday, so at night when u go home u'r tuning would be off compared to u'r tuning that same morning. carbs are expensive!
TURBO'D 3T.. it's self explanatory. gas mileage is better coz of fuel efficiency. u only tune it once. in the long run i think turbo-ing will be cheaper but hey thats just me.
FYI: my friend's kp61 is powerd by a carb 3TC, no BS.. flat out beat a GSR by about 2 car lengths on 3rd gear and that's with full body kit too (kp61). if u don't believe me ask kpsxtyone, he was there too.
GOODLUCK BRO!

i would think so! but the last time me and my bro were in New Jersey, we saw a guy running a turbo'd 3TC with a set of 48 sk's on his 1980 corolla. however, i don't know how the hell he's running it. all i remember is that this car was fast. he must have a stand alone unit in it. don't quote me on that though!
check out this site http://www.teamtoyminator.org/. it's a wicked site, lots of crazy Puerto Ricans with their bad-ass corollas, crazy PISTONHEADS!!!
