hey guys. i'm new to this forum.. and i was just wondering what is so good about this car? i've seen it a couple times and it looks cool but why the heck is it so expensive?? i'm already hooked onto the 86 and i was wondering what are some other things that make this car so great. alright..thanks a lot.
this has been discussed many times before...
please use the search function. and use it again on club4ag.
and if you don't know what's so good about it, how are u hooked on it? and please don't answer simply for its looks and because u jumped right into the bandwagon...
Can you please elaborate on why you are hooked on the 86? Not trying to flame you or anything...just wanted to know your opinions.
I agree with mechatune, if you do a search function on here and on Club4AG you'll find a lot of information.
As for what's so good about these corollas, I say very little. A lot of headaches, a lot of stuff to fix, basically a lot of money to bring it back to stock form (unless you find a mint one).
As for why it's so expensive? It's called the ID markup.
Well, I paid only $2000CDN (about $1500US) for my 86 GTS Hatchback. For that much, I got one in reasonably good shape, runs great, has a little bit of rust at the fenderwells, but, hey! this is Canada. They all do. But I have no car payments.
My insurance is pretty cheap, because this car is not considered a sports car by the insurance companies.
I have a hatchback that can carry almost as much as an SUV (with the back seats down). There's very little that I wanted to carry that I couldn't fit in this car. I put a 7 foot Christmas tree in it once........
I get 32 MPG in the city and 39MPG on the highway (Imperial gallons).
It's light, and small, and easy to drive (and even easier to park when the big behemoth SUV drivers can't park theirs without going over the lines into my parking spot).
With a twincam 1600 and a 5 speed, it's reasonably quick in traffic. Certainly not a Ferrari, but I also don't get a lot of speeding tickets, either. And if I feel that it's not fast enough in the future, there's lot of performance parts out there to increase it's power.
It handles extremely well. It's very well balanced, and handles the snow and ice excellently. I love sliding the back end out around corners in the winter, it's very predictable!
Because of Initial D and the drifting phenomena, my car is holding (or even increasing) its value, so I don't even have to worry about depreciation.
There is this board, Dori-Kaze, and Club 4AG for me to find help with any problems, and parts for replacing anything that does break. I haven't had to fix much, though, because the Toyota quality is shining through in my car. I've fixed less in this car that I did with my brand new Durango I used to drive. (My purchase price of my GTS was the same amount that I spent on gas for the Durango in a 3 month period, by the way).
And if I do have anything to fix on the car, I can do it myself, rather than pay the exorbitant price of mechanics these days. When the starter started to go bad on me on my Neon that I had before this car, I went to the parts store, bought a starter and brought it home. From the top and the bottom, I couldn't even SEE the starter in my Neon! I bought the factory manual, and I STILL couldn't find it. I had to take the car to a mechanic, and pay him to put it in for me. There is so much stuff packed into the engine bay of that Neon that you can't stick your arm down into it anywhere. No such problems with my GTS. It's easy to work on.
It's cheap, roomy, peppy and easy to work on. What more could you want? I love my GTS!

ahh good ol' hachi roku. gotta love initial d. that's what kinda pushed me over the edge and made me wanna get one. I kinda have to sell my current car first. It'll be one mean drifting machine a nice 20v will go nice in there or even a 20b
guess its just me, but i dont like how every other day theres a new guy showing up with a 86
we got people wanting to do engine swaps before knowing wtf is a 16V 4age
then some people want to buy a "jdm type ae86 bumper" when they can't even tell the differences
or how about purchasing what they think is the glorious AE86 only to find out its slowwww as hell, then decide to ditch it after a week, and the whole time dude doesn't know he got a SR5

nothing wrong with sr5's ...hehehe
i never said anything was wrong with SR5s, i have a SR5 and GT-S myself, and i'm not complaining
what i meant was, its the ignorant trend followers who probably bought themselves a AE86 SR5, or even GT-S thinking they're on the next cool wave of drifting and 'ol skool' sports cars, only to find out its everything opposite their fancy imagination. Now we got people complaining and whining what their car ISN'T, when its their lack of research and responsibility to blame
I agree. I did months of research before I decided to buy this car. But I think it is a great car and so far the funest car I've driven. It handles great and it's RWD. But I've also spennt $5,000 on retoration and I'm still not 100% done.
Hey... I completely agree in regards to what you mean by these people not doing their research. I'm sure we were all like that once, I know when I bought my first car (the one in my sig) I wasn't following anyone but the crowd grew the more the years followed and learned alot. A little bit of research goes a long way and alot of those newbies don't understand.
i can tell u one thing: AE86 isnt great because of it's looks as u have stated the north american ones look like ass IMO.
if u dont know what's so good about it, then what are ur reasons for liking the car? i sense that u have been influenced in some shape or form... no one likes a car just because it looks like a box. if they did, then the accord hatch must look sexy too and so does the EF wagon :o
