ae86

hi, i have an 85 white gts hatch. i just blew my motor and am looking at doing something better. like a 4agze, 3sgte, maybe a 20v 4age, i was wandering if it would be possible to put a 7mgte in my car. i really wanna do the swap and i know i would have to tunnel the engine bay but do u think it can be done as long as we have the tools to do it. ??

There was a time I was playing around with dropping a supra engine into a AE86. But from what Migs told me about a guy he knew that did it the end result was a car that could only do burn outs. It lost it's fun fast and the guy sold the car like a week later.

The 3S-GTE swap is fairly expensive. The main cost is just the engine. You will need some custom work to get everything to fit. Also you should get a stronger drive train and better suspension.

The 4A-GZE is probably the easiest swap but I'v hear *****ing in the past about axles breaking. so you should strengthen your drive train for this swap as well.

The 4A-GE 20V requires custom work to fit the enfgine in the car. As for what else is needed I don't know. The oly problem I've hear with this is how hard it is to get parts at times. But I don't visit Club 4AG that much these days do I'm not sure about other things that may need to be upgraded as well.

well how much money do u want to spend?

Swapping an engine isn't something u can really cut corners at... it's either put in right... or wrong... which one do u want? Also... unless u lay out your swap to a T... there's always hidden costs... it's the little things that cost the most time and money...

the easiest cheapest option would probably to swap a high comp red top into it (I'm assuming ur tranny is still good.) its got a little bit more power and the block is stronger (7-rib) so it's a bit stouter of a block to work from.

But... before u go on building a crazy 4age for ur ae86 u may want to look into reinforcing the body and driveline... AE86 rear diffs arn't exactly bullet proof...

IMO... The only line of engines I'd consider for the ae86 is the 4A-GE series... why? well lets say I've yet to drive/ride an ae86 with a different engine that still feels like an ae86...

my 2 cents

20V on an AE86...

20V on an AE86 would be my choice. but the initial buy might be a little on the expensive side. i know you can get it cheaper now like $850 CAD but it's not complete. the wiring harness is often times cut and it's w/o an ecu. so if you decide to go with the 20V make sure you spend the money and buy a complete engine with an uncut wiring and an ecu. a friend of mine has this set up on his '85 GT-S and they're rallying it hard. very strong car in it's class. you have to punch out your firewall for the distributor to fit. but there is a kit that u can buy so u can adapt it to run from the front. it's a lot of money though, i don't think it's worth buying. u have to custom make the pipes for your radiator. and if decide to get a silvertop20V, you have to customize your intake also. but if u get the blacktop20V, u don't have to do anything except take off the intake box and put some trumphets on it. like on the carbs. oh, you have to buy a high comp (for high psi) fuel pump, if i'm not mistaken at least 90psi. this is so the vvt will work properly. aside from that everything else on your AE86 will work fine. (ie. axles, transmission, differential). in my opinion this is the best NA set-up for u'r car. but then that depends on the purpose of u'r car, like if it's for drag maybe u'r better of with forced-fed motor. (ie. 4AGZE, 3SGTE, 3TGTE, turbo'd 16V 4AG or go crazy like 1JZ, haha!)

GOODLUCK on the project! and post some pics!

id say go with the 4agze. easier to find parts and not too hard to swap in. you dont have to cut or bash in your firewall either
