the way i did mine (90 sr5) is the following:
remove the stock speakers and the grills.... they are one unit and you can't replace the speaker and use the stock grills... remove the rear dash (you're on your own for this one, i've broken mine in 3 different places... hard to tell, but i did)..... then remove the black shrouding that held the old speakers in....
get some 5.25" speakers (a good set), and a set of 1/2"? speaker spacers (basically plastic rings)..... put the dash back in, then drill holes through the metal portion (or you can use self tapping screws) by bolting the spacers down. The spacer then can be a mounting point for the speakers. that's how i had to do it (w/o cutting)
