speedometer

I just drove home with a busted speedometeron my '87 rolla(EE80). It had seemed to work fine then I had my diff fluid checked and topped up a couple weeks ago and it became a bit wobbly.
Then just an hour ago I started up and drove home without it.
Has this happened to anyone else?

I'm gonna tackle this when it's light out so any suggestions between now and then will be appreciated, thnx.

*note sarcasm* geee...thanx so much for the help guys...I'll go try that right now. *rolls eyes* One would think that with all the ppl who pass through here on a regular basis at least one person would offer some suggestion before I rip the bastard apart to figure it out.
But no worries, whatever I find I'll post it up so it'll maybe help anyone who experiences the same prob later on. *pffft* thanx again bros...

seeing how you posted it today and also replied on the same day... and it's a weekend (usually the boards are much slower on the weekends) you're not going to get a reply as quickly...... patience is sometimes the key

when i had my speedometer problems it went from working fine to not working at all..... along with the speedometer went the odometer and tripometer.... it ended up being the lower cable (into the transmission) had busted inside the sheathing..... $40 later and it was fine.... it did, though, take me some time to originally diagnose the problem

if you have a cable driven speedo, then if the cable broke then your odo and trip should have gone out as well

mmm...well ok...I apologize for the impatience...
yeah, I got the thing with the odometer and the tripometer figured out as well and it turns out that the cable really is busted but it's at a point closer to the gauge where it's inside the car under the dash panel.

I don't want to have to get another cable and it breaks in the same spot so I'm trying to understand how it could break in a spot that doesn't allow any movement. Maybe it's just old age *shrug*.

Do I need the particular cable that's suited for this model or can any cable that fits work?

i'm pretty sure you will need one for that model...... it's gonna be kinda spendy

also, these cables break every now and then... has nothing to do with where the cable breaks... it's just wear from time.... they basically work by spinning the cable in the sheathing, and the speedometer is turned at a certain rate compared to the cable.... so it's just a matter of the cable getting old and breaking

phack! *sigh* well, I was gonna check out a scrapyard or something but if it's model-specific then it'll have to wait 'till I get paid on Thursday cuz after I fixed my comp it's been hand-to-mouth livin' this last week.
