88 Corolla auto tranny swap

I have a 1988 Corolla that was blessed with a 3spd automatic tranny :o. I was wondering if it would possible to swap out the tranny for a 4spd or a 4spd with overdrive? Will is be a straight swap? What other year/trim level Corolla trannies can i use??

you can put any tranny you want that comes from a 4afe, or 4age engine

i did the auto to manual 5spd swap not too long ago

i took it out of a 89 carb corolla sedan

the only electrical wires going to the transmission is 4 wires
2 for postive and 2 negative
1 is for your neutral safety swich to make sure you are in neutral to start your car
and the other is for your rear reverse lights

there is also one cable to the tranny which is your speedo cable

thats about it

hope that helped

What is needed for a manual conversion? Does the 88-92 Corollas use a cable or hydro tranny?

If you never did an auto tranny to manual swap before, its best to get a friend was has. The flywheel is different, your gonna need to buy a clutch and the shifting cables are needed from the donor car. It's not a drop in plug and play thing. The clutch master cylinder needs to be added, slave cylinder, different tranny mounts and so on. I've done 2 myself and I practically moved half the car in parts on on 1st one. I suggest assisting someone else 1st before you start hitching rides for a couple of days doing your own.

Your 88 should have a 4AF which is carburated and the 4AFE started in 1990 and they are fuel injected. The trannys are the same. Corollas 88-92 are great on interchangeable parts. You gonna like that forth overdrive gear...saves gas too. See if you can pull the shifter from that donor car. There may be an overdrive button on the shifter shaft. I'm trying to sell an auto tranny, the one you need but I'm over 3000 miles away in CT. Good luck

It helps to look at the dates on the threads before you post on them, this one is 4yrs old and chances are the man you're addressing is looong gone from this site.

Exclamation

Find a C-52 trans (5 speed manual). You will see that the C-52 bell housing has 2 starter humps in it (right and left side). C-52 was put in some corollas from 1988 to the mid 1990's.
