Note, this is not directed at one person alone, just a rant:
I guess there's this thing with owning an ae86, it's like you become leet or something cause you own an "icon". But many do not see the other side of tings, the problems with old cars, the pain of restoring to stock form and the worst part is when the car is sold after the owner finds out that ae86 does not = drifting beast!
I gotta admit, I once used looked for an 86 but come to thing of it, it's just not practical. it's NOT cheap, it's NOT reliable and right now it's not worth the money considering all the jacked up prices due to the ae86 craze.
Why do you say that the corolla gts is unreliable? I believe that the engine is very reliable when it's working properly.
I do however agree with you that it is not cheap. The amount of $$$ to restore this car can get pretty high depending on the condition when bought, especially if the owner doesn't do the repairs themselves.
And yes, right now it's not worth the money due to the ID craze going on.
My dad got his AE92 back in 1988. It now has almost 400,000 km on it.
It has been serviced on a regular bases. (following the scheduled service in the owners manual)
He drives the car farily hard, it has also been to the race track a couple of times. So the engine is very reliable for the amount of punishment that it has put up with for the last 14/15 years.

thats with any vehicle though. regular maintenance makes the life of an engine. period. i dont even want one for the whole "drifting craze." i want an older rwd corolla. i had an 81 that i wish i had now. id rock it. it was a burnout master (stupid kid teen thing) for 85 hp it was a beast. and all things being the same id just as soon have an 81 coupe. ive seen good things with the 3tc and i think i could make that happen. pretty much i just want a corolla to play with. id like to have a 20v in one just to say i have it. thats just me though....i just think having 20 valves on a four cyl is just neat. not trying to start another rant with the 20v im just a nerd like that.

all of us should realize that reliability can't be found on any 15 year old car. unless you're one of those people that collects cars and never drive it. nissan, toyotas, mitsubishi, hondas.. it doesn't matter what car, name doesn't mean much coz it's all about how the car was treated for the past 15 years. the cars that you guys are talking about are sport compacts not exotics, so the drivetrain on these cars are production made, so one motor could be different from the other. unlike the hand built motors found on majority of the exotics. we can have this arguement forever of which is better, but it boils down to preference. heck, you guys are complaining about 15 year old, i own one that's 21 years old and i'm not complaining. if you like what you drive you wouldn't mind fixing it.
BOTTOM LINE: any OLD car = $$$
ADVICE: if you can like your car even if it's just sitting in your garage/driveway bcoz you broke it.. then you are ready my friend to own an old car. patience is a big thing when it comes to this type of cars. trust me on that!
