180hp 2ZZGE 1.8 liter from the GTS is not going to be particuarly useful because the 50hp surge STARTS at 6,000 and ends at 8,000 rpm. You BETTER hope you don't miss that next higher gear shift gate and instead .... engage the next lower gear. KaBOOOM.
Also, one might ask if the new optional engine will still have the 1ZZFE engine's 112 mph vehicle SPEED limiter. Hmmm?

true but we have not seen how toyota has retuned this engine.. i read toyota was interested in how lotus had changed the ecu for their elise sportscar- which uses a retuned 2zz to get a max power of 190hp and a much more broadened powerband than the celica gts... it has been said in their press release about the xrs- it features an engine with a broadened powerband. and besides, once someone figures out how to reprogram the computer, the lift might be able to be activated at 5,000 rpm and holy hell that car will fly. now as aftermarket developers are figuring out how to get past the returnless fuel issue, and bypass the ecu- there are already at least 3 forced induction kits available for the 2zz. each putting out around 6psi and getting mad results. even with trd's supercharger, the 1zz is not as powerful (peak hp) than the 2zz.
in japan this engine is putting out 250whp N/A! its just a matter of time before someone cracks the ecu and it becomes a flagship engine. right now there is just no support, and coupled with its high compression it makes it a really tough engine to mod. using a standalone engine mgmt is the only way to bypass this, but in that case you cant even use the greatest part about the engine (lift!)
about the mazda 3, i say ditto on that car looking like ass. the rear looks pretty good, but the grille is a little too triangular on the bottom- imo makes the car look fruity. mazda has always had difficulty proportioning their car designs correctly. and the interior of the xrs looks great inside. another thing about mazda vs toyota- reliability
imagine this car with a 170hp 2zz 6spd under the hood
A) Simply lowering the threshold of VVTL-i engagement from 6k rpm to 5k rpm may well require a different cam profile to prevent a flat spot or an unfavorable emissions increase.
B) While a number of 2ZZGE and Honda S2000 engines have been grenaded by missed shifts at redline (down instead of up-shifts), there seems to be a need for a shift gate blocker for at least 2nd and 3rd gears to prevent engine damage.
C) Again, what about the 112 mph vehicle speed governor present on current 1ZZFE equipped Corollas? The current limit corresponds nicely with currently equipped 'S' rated OEM tires.
D) A "broader torque curve" needs to be a lot more than just a few foot pounds or a few horsepower over the earlier state of tune to be anything more than an advertisement talking point.
Have you taken the NUMMI plant tour? I drove my aging Prizm up to NUMMI (Fremont, CA) in June of 2002 and took the tour. I bought the Prizm new and had about 275,000 showing on the odometer. Made the cover of NUMMI News the following month. LOL Bought my 2003 Corolla a couple of months later. Sold the Prizm to a friend. Still going with 300k on the orginal engine.
from 03 on (inclusive with the rolla/matrix xrs), the celicas now have a wider shift gate- its not so close together, which makes it a lot easier to find the next gear. and obviously if you cant operate the car without misshifting you should probably not be racing it. a good driver can get a lot more out of the celica gt-s than the average person.
im just being hopeful that this "broadened power curve" is substantial too- because ive heard a lot of complaints about the turbo-lag type feel of the 2zz. given the right driver, i could see this problem being minimized though.
if i were to own this car, i will probably not do any mods that are not covered by a trd warranty, so im praying they dont scrap the idea of a supercharger at trd. if they are creating one, good luck to them!
Glad you brought up the shift gate improvements jwa276, they
have been in affect for quite some time.
That coment about the tires makes no sense because if you read the article the Corolla XRS is getting the 17" Matrix Alloys with nice tires and I'm sure they are using the same govenor (if there is one) as the Matrix XRS and Celica GT-S have now.
Still the driveability of the 2zz-ge comes into question. I think it boils down to personal preference because some people like a little high-strung screamer for an engine and some don't want to work hard to squeeze out the juice.

What are we all stick newbs or something?? you must drive automatic.
as for the rev limiter.. who cares if its governed at 112mph/190kmh its not like you'll ever get to use it in real roads.. and if you do.. well hopefully you don't get caught.
