Are 1999 Corollas noisy?

I have not driven any other 1998-2001 corolla, but mine seems too noisy. There is this constant growling noisy coming from the front that gets louder with speed. Is not the engine because when I take my foot of the gas the sound remains constant only to diminish as the car speeds down. I think it may be a worn wheel bearing or something like that.

The CV joints seem to be fine (boot not torn and doesn`t make any noise in tight turns)

It gets so bad that at 45mph I need to turn stereo volume up. I have read reviews of my car and they all agree that the car is little loud

Are these car louder than usual? (compared to civics and neons)

Thanks.

Hi, I drive a 98 rolla and when I first bought it stock it was too quiet. So I don't know what it could be on your car. What kind of noise is it? Does it click, whine, squeal, etc... You will have to get someone to look at it. Mine is really noisier than stock now. A mellow sound now that I have a CAI, exhaust.

My 99 is quiet..... except for...

My 99 corolla is quiet although not as quiet when it was new, when new Corollas can rival 4 cylinder Camrys in terms of quiet. There are some rattles in in my 99 now (70,700miles) but it is still relatively quiet compared to many other compacts out there. I do have this one annoying rattle that comes from the steering coulumn though that only comes in during when I am at a stop idling.
Corollas are generally renowned for low noise especially at low speeds and gentle highway cruising speeds. The engines do thrash about during hard accelartion though more so than most other 4cylinder compacts. However in comarison to the Dodge Neon, Nissan Sentra and Civic the latest model Corollas 98-04 win in terms of low noise. I can speak from experience as I have driven them all. Could very well be your tires, they alone can account for tremendous ammounts of noise at high speeds. Is it howling and humming you hear?

Well I think I have discovered my problem. The noise nay be caused by a faulty front wheel bearing. I really cant listen to the engine at 45mph since humming noise front the front is too loud. i am going to have to change both wheel bearing.

Before you change the wheel bearing, put the car up on a lift in neutral with the wheels dead straight and grab the tire and wiggle it back and forth, up and down, turn them and compare to the other side. The wheel that has the most slack side to side or friction when turning is probably the bad one.

Well It was the left wheel. I replaced the wheel bearing and the car is now very very quiet. I might go ahead and replace the right one but it seems to be working fine

Now how do i get rid of some minor suspension rattles?
