Check Engine Light on: Car wont go faster than 60

Hi all,

I have a 96 corolla LX, and today, my check engine light went on, this has happened before, about 2-3 years ago, (I forgot what they fixed), but I did get it fixed, paid somewhere around $350...so, back to the story, I brought it to a shop. They ran a diag test, and said, "We are not sure why the engine light is on, but it might due to some *PARTS* (Something I dont understand), and if it doesnt go on again, then it should be fine, if it does, then we will change that part, its about $300 to fix and we reset the error code".

now the check engine light is not on anymore, but when I was driving on highway before, the car will not go faster than 60, the fastest i tried is 62mph.

any idea what could be wrong???

Thanks,
Tak

EDIT: Ok, 3 years ago, it was the oxygen sensor, i got that fixed. this time, its the EGR valve. and car wont go faster then 60mph. Is this odd? how much to replace, and if this can be diy? if so, any writeups?

Hello all..

Ok, more information, folks.

3 years ago, when the engine light came on, it was the oxygen sensor. And yesterday, they said the part is, "NEED EGR VALVE".

1. Any idea if this can be DIY, if so, any writeups?

2. what should be the price range for fixing the egr valve?

3. could this be related to car not going faster than 60mph??

4. most importantly, what is the egr valve, and what does it do?

Thanks!
Tak

EGR stands for exhaust gas recirculation.

I don't see how this is keeping you from going over 60mph.. although I don't fully care or understand the efi and ecu systems of cars though.. since I'm a carbureted man..

It all depends where you go to get the new valve.. junk yard.. dealership.. autostore.. etc.. If it's cheap enough get a factory replacement from a dealership.

And um... if you don't know anything about your car to work on it.. I'd suggest not trying to do it yourself.. What you really need to do is get yourself an official Toyota Repair manual from the dealership or online for your vehicle and study it so you get a feel for automechanics before you decide to take on a repair. Plus the book will come in mighty handy when making your repairs.

i see.

then what could be the reason for a car not going over 60mph? I understand its too odd to be the egr valve too....

and how much do shops usually charge for egr valve? is about 300 (parts + labor) sounds reasonable?

and, I understand there must be a bunch of reasons for engine light to come on, but what are some main reasons of members having, that will lead ot the engine light to turn on?

So far, from my research, i have seen, oxygen sensor and egr valve failure that may result in engine light to turn on...

any ideas?

Thanks.

i already took my car to a local shop, and they said its the EGR valve. and they reset my code already.

This is my guess....

egr is the thing thats making the engine light to go on.
not be able to go faster than 60 is another problem lying around with the effect of the engine light...

anyway, how much is the egr valve fix at local shops usually?

ideas?

Take your car somewhere else and get a second opinion. It seems that the people at your shop are guessing too.
