97 Corolla making noise when I turn

It's only when I turn the wheel to the right. And only when the car is in motion. It almost sounds like the tire is hitting something(kind of a squeeking rubbing noise) but I can't find it rubbing anywhere.

I notice it most in parking lots (slow speeds)

I put the car up on stands and tried it and it didn't do it. I did notice that the left wheel had some up and down play in it. The Ball joint seemed solid.

Wheel Bearing?
Brakes?

It's driving me nuts!!!!!

Thank you. This seems like an awesome forum.

Yea.. um.. check the tire.. can you move it? If you can move the tire(s) with your hand.. like jiggle them then you have bad inner tie-rods or the rack needs replacing.
It isn't being overworked.. the powersteering.. unless you aren't running the correct sized equipment.. ?

so yea.. go check that.. It's not the brakes.. Doubtfully the wheel bearings.. it's something with the steering.. so probably the rack is going bad... or a rack support/bushing.

it's probably your CV boot...... if it's ripped it causes the wheel to make noise... and that's generally only if you're turning one direction, but sometimes it will be bad and you'll hear it either way you turn... but you hear it ONLY when you turn

It could also be the belts.. I know fords are notorious for this type of noise.. every time you turn the wheel, the belts make a funky noise.

I think I've narrowed it down to the left side wheel bearing. I replaced all of the belts and axles not long ago, And I replaced the brakes today. There is definite play in the left side wheel bearing. Any tips on doing this job will be much appreciated. I ordered the wheel bearing assembly kit from Auto Zone and should have it tomorrow. I also picked up a tie rod removing tool in case I have to remove the knuckle to get the bearing pressed.

Its pretty straightforward, if you've been playing with Powerglides and 350's you shouldn't have a problem.

Eh.. I don't see how it would be the wheel bearing causing noise ONLY when you turn in one direction.. but ok.

How do you know there is play? Are you able to rock the wheel back and forth? If so that is the inner-tie rod or the rack that needs replacing.

Just wondering how you came to the conclusion of wheel bearing and what this "play" is that you found.

I love how you can all diagnose these noises on-line , you all must be some serious technicians, cuz I'm getting paid the big bucks, and I can't do on-line diagnosis. Maybe I need more schooling, but hey thats just me??

Hah.. you're a Scarborough mechanic.. so far from this board I haven't heard anything good about Scarborough dealers... maybe that has somethin to do with it?

But in all seriousness it isn't that hard to figure out when everyone on this board owns basically the same damn fucking car man..

Alright. I'm not claiming to be an expert here. I do play with 350's and Powerglides so basically These cars are foreign to me LOL.

I'll check out the rack and the inner tie rods. Any tips on what to look for? If I grab just the hub with the caliper and rotor off of it, it moves up and down. With everything put together I get up and down play if I grab the tire. The passenger side has no play at all.
