mileage

I recently purchased a 2004 Siennna and Corrolla from Watertown Toyota, in Watertown, MA. As unbelievable as it may sound the Sienna which is just about the biggest minivan out there gets far better mileage under the same conditions than my Corolla. The Corolla has almost 1500 miles on it and still gets only 16 mpg, and often emits a sulfur like smell. The dealer ship is already giving me the run around , recommending different gasolines etc. and other such nonsense. Does any have any comments or suggestions.

Find a better dealership next time.

You can pull your spark plugs.. look at the tips see what color they are that is a tell if you are running to rich or to lean.. if they are white you are to lean if they are black you are to rich.. should be in the grayish scale... But this sulfur smell.. i don't exactly know.. hmm hopefully someone else can shed some light on this.

16mpg is inexcusable. My Corsa gets 42 on the highway and 38 in town. A Corolla should be at least near that. At the next oil change look under car for a crushed muffler/cat, pipe, anything that may create serious restriction. Also try (with engine off) disconnect the battery for 45 minutes, then let idle for 45 minutes after reconnecting, this may reset the computer, after that I'd get a diagnostic from a quick-tune place.

mcase,

Did you ever figured out what was causing the excessive fuel consumption? I am running into the same problem with my corolla. I am only getting like 17mpg in the city. I am probably getting worse mpg than my parents` 96 Blazer (V6)

I am suspecting that it may be related to the radiator fan being on all the time. (this is the way its been since i bought it used in nov) I might have to take it to an EFI shop.

Question mileage

to hdsalinas

Unfortunately, I doubt our problems are related to the fan. My car is brand new and the fan does not stay on. I am meeting with a toyota representative on the 9th of march. I'm interested to see if he has any answers or if I have to hire an attorney

It could be the cat but I have read that when the cat is clogged, the engine may stall without notice and the car´s performace would suffer too.

My car runs fine and never stalls or hesitates (even under hard acceleration) , but I must admit is not as fast as I thought it would be. This is the only 1998-3002 corolla that I have driven so i have nothing to compare it to.

I have been thinking that it might be a faulty O2 sensor. Maybe the car is running to rich. I wonder if if I could use the same sensor ffrom the previous model since here in Honduras there are more parts for it and would be easier to find.

But if it was the oxigen sensor, wouldn´t I get a Check Engine light? Also with the engine running rich, would you notice a difference in engine sound at idle? (my car does not have a tach)

Could a faulty o2 sensor reduce 10mpg from you mileage?

Sorry for all of these questions but it is very frustating see how fast the neddle goes south

mcase, I hope that they resolve your problem too.
