Ignition problem?

I have a '91 manual sedan with 100K in great shape. Recently around 2300 RPMs the engine will instantly rev up another 1200 RPMs without any gain in power, like it was thrown into neutral or it was an automatic waiting to shift. Power grabs then it revs back down.

I replaced the whole distributor last tune-up but that didn't solve it. I don't know how to diagnose it further. Could it just be the ignition coil? Something wrong with the computer? Any advice or experiences appreciated. Thanks.

worn clutch? Does it happen when you floor the gas or if you're just cruising along?

Hm, clutch is starting to slip a bit. Happens when it's floored on flat ground or just cruising and hitting a moderately steep hill.

Sounds like a slipping clutch, but I'd wait for a few more opinions. One way to test it is to start the car, engage the ebrake as tightly as you can, put it in reverse and the engine should die instantly when you let up the clutch. Another way would be to cruise in 4th at about 3000rpm and floor it, if its worn, it'll slip and the revs will climb with no change in speed.
