Would removing the EGR help performance at all, even if it hurt emmisions?

Exhaust Gas Recurculation. Takes exhaust gas from the manifold and recurculates it back into the intake. I'm guessing by making sure every last hydrocarbon is burned, even the ones that manage not to get combusted the first time, the emmisions are as clean as possible. I would assume the engine would make more power by breathing only fresh air instead of the spent exhaust too at a sacrifice of emmsions. However I figured the thing looked simple enough that I could put it back on easily enough for inspection.

egr does recirculate a bit of the hc's, but its main purpose is to reduce combustion temperature and speed

So by increasing combustion speed I get more power right? Is it always working or only when its cold?

What could I do to compensate? Higher octane gas? Would that be enough? I'm not gonna fry my pistons or anything am I?

couldn't tell ya, higher octane could work, running a really rich mixture would make it run cooler too

i know that a lot of people that get japanease 3sgte's and they don't have egr (and very little else for emissions)

The EGR is an emission control device that recirculates exhaust gasses to cool engine cylinder temps, which in return, decreases NOx levels.

There's not much performance to be gained if you bypass the EGR since no exhaust circulation is commanded during PE (power enrichment) conditions.

As somebody stated above, higher cylinder temps could lead to KR conditions and the ECU will pull your timing as a result.

The only benefit you gain from bypassing the EGR would be a cleaner TB and intake plenum.

Just keep it on.. it doesn't hurt your performance any noticeable amount.

My question is, does removing the EGR valve lower your fuel economy.
