most (except for cars with top mount intercoolers) factory hood scoops are place in the middle of the hood, then have some sort of inner ducting within the hood to get to the air box
it would look a little funny, but if you mount the scoop backwards it wouldnt' be as much of a problem, there's another good thing that mounting it backwards does, but i can't think of the term (has to do with the excess air/pressure going into the engine bay rather than just over the hood and over the car......)
