I need help ive got a 4age 20v silvertop...in a 96 rolla, with filter, exaust, crankpully, i was beaten by a gti 16v by half a car. Not good i was very upset. now i dont want to spend lots of cash but i would like to tune the motor so i can run quicker, what can i do??? plus i saw a dude and said that u can put the 20v head on a 4agze is that true? is it sensitive like the ls/vtec and what is power output. Bottom line i need to go faster but i dont want to spend 10 ginos for parts and get 1/4 of power, so if anyone can help with opinions please do so
thank you

that's why boosted GZE power is always gonna be the hands-down street weapon of choice if you want a 4AG based motor.
Still a 16V VW should be a pretty close race, if not a relatively easy kill for even a 16V 4AG. I would check your motor out, and make sure...and double check to see if that 16V really was what it was.
You should ask Derek about my shinanegans with VWs..hahah. Once had a jigga-posin (you know leaning to the side, wrist on the top of the steering wheel) gino dude with his girl that he wanted to impress get thoroughly rinsed out even with 3 people in my car (avg 170lbs each!). LOL... that was funny...the guy's balls probably shrank into themselves.
OH, but I don't street race... I had to get into his lane. but he picked on the wrong guy to fukk with.

the 20V head will not be beneficial to the GZE bottom end, because the 20V head has a lot of valve overlap...something you don't want with a Boosted car..it'll be very tedious to set up.
In addition, I was told that the 20V head and the GZE bottom ends will not work together because of slightly different oil and coolant passages.

it could also be the easiest thing to correct... it's the driving skills...some people do NOT know how to launch and shift gears quickly yet effectively.
I've lost a few drag races where i would have done those mistakes, and sometimes you find that the runs that didn't feel as exciting to be the quickest runs you have all day.

I think Jover shares my sentiments, when I say that the 20v is highly overated. Indeed its a potent engine, but it has such a peaky powerband that you really need to adjust your gearing for it to be benneficial. All of the 20v power comes on at the top end making it the track engine of choice. Why? because, on a closed road circuit, you'll always be in that rpm band.
I agree with jover, the gze is the engine of choice for street racing and flat power out the box. And No, you do not want to swap a 20v head on a gze because you'll just open a pandoaras box.
The 20v is built to the max, it has lightenend internals for a quick revving responsive engine, it is not intended for heavy modifications such as forced indution or NOS, it would be cheaper to swap it for a GZE than to go through the cost of blowing it up first and then installing a GZE.
I'd sell it and get the GZE if I was you, you can probably get $3k for a complete pre-prepped ready to bolt in 20v....if your patient.
No, I agree with George.. NOS that sucker to death... as long as all you care about is winning. A properly set-up nitrous system and proper precautions will not blow up your motor, just don't push your luck.

Hello 20V sleeper
I would ask what he had cause the stock GTI is preety slow.
There is a VW in Midnight that has the 2.0 liter 16 Valve swaped into his GTI.
Now that things a preety quick contraption.
With full roll cage and 17's he clicks of 15.6's/15.7's.
But even then, over at Club 4ag there are 20v's hitting 15.2's -15.4's w/ a few small modds.
Your launch is just about the most important moment of a race. Get your 60' down and the GTI shouldn't have a chance unless he cheats w/ the "NOS".
My two cents!!
C-YA!!

Probelm with the 20v is finding parts for it! It's simple to find 4AGZE parts since the engine was originally availbile in the MR2 SC, unlike the 20v which was never sold in a car here. Adding cams (if you can find them locally???) to your setup would only shift the powerband even higher. Did you use the '96 Corolla transmission or did you also swap the 20v tranny too?
