Erratic Idle

I have a 1988 corolla sr5. Having problem with idle. thought it was the throttle linkage on the carb. so I replaced the spring on the linkage but still no luck. when i start the car the rpm reach 4000 until I slam the gas pedal through the floor board. it also does it when I shift from 1st gear to 2nd gear and once again i have to slam the pedal through the floor board again. can someone please help me. going out of my mind trying to figure out this problem. lol

all help is much appreciated even a little help!

Uh... so you just have to tap the peddle or literally slap it down full way real quick? It happens all the time no matter what?

Yea.. start the car.. it should idle really high like u said right? Then pop the hood.. don't stop the high idle.. look all around the intake.. I am pretty sure it's carbureted right? Well take the air filter off n stuff.. and try to find out what is binding up.. there is like an air flap on the top inside of the carb.. u can move that open and look down with a flashlight at the throttle plate.. see if that is open far or what.. just play around with that till u find the problem.. if you don't see any binding going on with the throttle plate it's probably a secondary system.. like idle up or electrical load idle up or something liek that, that is causing more air or fuel to go into the manifold..

had the same problem before..

sprayed some wd40 on the side of the carb where the cable goes.

problem goes away but came back after a few days.

there's some kind of linkage there that clips the throtle to raise the rpm after starting. mechanic said that's it's some kind of idle-up so the engine would go to normal temp faster (for cold weather countries) - though i'm not sure about this. a little nudge by the finger and the rpm would go back down.

But it is such a hassle to raise the hood and nudge those mechanism at the side of the carb everytime I would start my engine.

so I took it to another mechanic (a place here in manila that specializes in carb tuning. a whole stretch of shops and grease monkeys tinkering with carbs...)

they overhauled the carb and presto, problem's gone.

the shop that I went to before is into selling subic cars now. I
dont' think they're into engine tuning anymore.

you can try Kamuning. I've heard a lot of guys point to M2M shop for carb related troubles.

the sensor you're talking about is called a cold start sensor

there's a slight chance that somehow your throttle position sensor got a little screwy
